Default Pricing a Sapphire Cosworth

After 16 years of ownership my Auntie has decided to sell her L reg saph. I've known the car since I was at college, 18 years ago
She's selling due to lack of use and spending what spare time she has out on her bike. The car is in very good condition, completely standard other than a stainless exhaust and dump valve and has 60 odd thou on the clock.
I've always said I'd like it if she decided to sell. When she said she was selling in the new year I asked what she wanted for it. She said she'd been in touch with an auction company and sent photos in. They reckon it should fetch 20k. Now I know RS prices have gone daft lately, but are top Saph's really fetching 20k ?!!
One of the last top saph's I saw for sale was staffis old one which I'm sure was up for around 14k?
I can't remember seeing a late saph with middle mileage for sale for a long time now. What money are they fetching? I know a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

last late last off the line saff went for about 24k recently at auction but that was a special car with very low miles.

staffies car was 2wd.

If it was my aunty id would expect it to be cheap 12 k tops for a perfect car.

2wd go for more than 4wd in similar condition, but l reg Saphs may command a but more due to rarity even though they are only registered in 1994 as nobody wanted them.
Staffis old car was Ł14995, an unfinished project and modified, you can't compare that to your aunties car which is standard except exhaust,4wd and on an l plate.
Make her an offer and if it's not enough let her take it yo auction,I'm sure after fees she won't get near 20k if the bidding goes that high.

She's under no illusion that she'll get 20k for it. Like myself she's not sure of what they go for these days hence why getting in touch with the auction house. I see more Escorts and 3 doors for sale than late saph's.
There's no way I'd pay 20k for it, even 15k seems ott to me, but the last time I had RS's was 10 years ago now, and 15k back then got a very good escort

Do you really think a 60 k from new saph is only worth 8k?

that will do an easy 15 K at auction and then 20k retail..

remember the saph, 3 door and rst that went through auctions recently
saph did 35k
3 door did 45k
and the RST 62k

yes they were low mileage and in one case very low but that represents how the market is changing

Its far from good that one. again 1000's in receipts on how many chips and dump valves its had.

To put that right would cost around 5k
imo

And why do they show that part of the boot which never ever rots.

Them cars you list above are best of bread. The saff that did 35 was a bonkers mallard green one was it not? That's a rare car in an auction that would of have collectors there. A run of the mill 4x4 sold to jo public is not realistically going to sell for over 10 is it. And if it dose I bet it will take a very very long time to sell

If it's condition is reflected in the relatively low miles it's done its worth more than 8k,rs gus is selling a rotten 1 that's partly stripped for 5k and there seems to be interest in it so a lowish miles good condition 1 has to be worth a good bit more.

Was the 35k saph not smokestone blue and previously owned by the chairman of the rsoc??

Like everything else with an rs badge there's more demand than there is supply.

I don't think there's many older rs's of any make actually worth what they are advertised for, they may sell at that price but they are not actually worth it,just the way the market for them has went.

Don't get me wrong saffs are going up but I don't think 4x4's are over the 15 mark yet or in most cases the 10 mark unless it's a very special car.

I know the o.p hasn't put every detail about his aunts car in but I'm thinking from what he has said its a bit better than some others that may be for sale
L reg (unregistered k plate car really, probably cheaper when new to clear)
Last owner for 16 years, lady owned.
60-70k,tbh most cossies you see have done this mileage, especially rs500's.if it's got the mot history and paperwork then this will back it up.
Standard bar exhaust and dump valve, easily reversible if wanted or a blank canvass for somebody.

It sounds decent and could be a gem,or it could have sat outside for 16 years and never had an oil change or hoovered.

We all keep saying that they aren't worth this or I would sell mine for that but the reality is they are going to fetch the money.

You may feel 8k should get you the mintest there is but if you can't even find a ropey car for that then you aren't going to get a minter. If you can't find a decent car for less then Ł15k then eventually it's bite the bullet and pay that for it.

The fact is the days of them being a supercar for council estate budgets are long gone. People with money are buying them and the prices will only go up. If you've got one hold on to it.

I can see the car in question doing Ł15k+ quite easily at auction.

I've just pulled my Sapphire 2wd Cosworth out of storage after 10years, it was in a room, dehumidifed and started every week and moved back and forth, Last MOT was in 2005.

Just completed a few bits on it then its back on the road

i would say 15k sold privately ,upto 18 k at auction .

the fact its a l reg will certainly add to its value

I agree, as with most things it's all down to supply and demand and there certainly seems more demand for a standard saff than there is supply these days.

If the car in question needs no money spending on it then I'm sure Ł15k+ is easily achievable.

As for that 2wd on eBay, good price for what it is I think, needs a few things changing to put it back to how I'd want it so it's still a Ł10k car in my eyes.

I think i am to a point now where i am never going to own another taxi which really is a pity. I find it very hard to spend 15K on something at one point i was buying for 3-4k.

i would love a magnenta at 330bhp just to take out once in a while and sit in the garage but nw people are asking 10k plus i just can't bring myself to spend it.

Agreed regards to the moonstone thats a lot of different shades of one colour!

One recently sold for Ł35k at auction (it was exceptional though, mileage was something like 25K).

The prices have hiked dramatically recently and it's good that for once the Saph has as well. I can't see they will ever match MK1 prices, but I think I am right in saying there are less Saph's than 3DR's left now.

Not long ago 10K was seen as the most for a immaculate example, now it seems that it's not far short of that for an average example.

That's was a mallard green saff I'm sure from the bonkers collection so a very rare car you can't price them all based on that

It seems that the cars in demand are the unmodified and standardish examples, so one with that mileage, owners and a stainless exhaust only are the ones that will do good money I reckon. Also being an L plater is a nice touch.

I don't think it's worth Ł20k personally, agree with whoever said around Ł12 - 13k.

What colour is it? Any pics out of interest?

It's white, I've not got any pics of it. It was on the saph stand at national day. I personally thought 12-13k was about right, although the majority seem to think 15k

Your right, I remember that now. Even so the prices have increased in general.

That's undervalued imo, this is where prices were a while ago, I recon it's around 10-12.

Don't get me wrong, as a saph owner I would like to think they are going up in value but at the same time I think certain companies are manipulating their values to create higher profits for themselves which is starting to price other enthusiast's out of the market.
I would like to think that one day I might get to own an ecos or 3 door but the way things are going that looks quite unlikely, I just don't think it will be in my price range.
I don't like to think that people are buying the cars as investments and have no emotional attachment, purely a business transaction. This is definitely starting to happen in my opinion.
