best daily drivers for under 2k
looking to buy a good economical daily driver(fwd) and dont wanna spend anymore than 2 grand on one. usually my daily drivers are 500 quid shitters and just go on what turns up when i need another but im now planning my next one and want something with a bit of comfort, be presentable and above all be reliable and cost effective to maintain. i tend to concentrate my car shopping on stupid toys but its hard to justify having such things when im doing the school run in a rotten mk1 focus lol. i will be off loading one of my playthings to fund a new car (mk4 rst powered sleepr) and know theres some clued up types on here who will hopefully point me in the right direction. cheers

My work hack is a VW Bora, 1.9 tdi sport, bulletproof pd lump, 130 bhp and does easy 50mpg, 6 speed box, cruise control, bought it 2 years ago as a 1 owner from new fsh with 83K, now sits on 128k and is as good as gold, was looking at Golfs but this was cheaper and less miles.

We have an 06 plate Mondeo ST Tdci and it's spot on, bought it on 82k 2 years ago, now on 101k, serviced it 3 times and it's been faultless apart from a steering rack, scrubs up alright and looks well.
It's got the Leather recaro's, Double din sat nav head unit, air con, cruise control, and it goes well when you want it too, does 45-55 mpg dependant upon driving conditions

I got fucked off with old shit so got a massive loan and bought a 62 plate focus ST estate, on 26450 miles.
its not very economical (28-30mpg) but it is comfy, fast and practical.
the kids love it and even the wife likes it - which is a first lol.
the 2002 A3 1.9 TDi sport quattro it replaced, while would do 40 odd mpg with its arse handed to it was costing a shit load of cash to keep going. i paid near ly £3k for it, spent over £1500 in the 18 months of ownership so offed it, for the new buyer to tell me the DMF had gone... enough was enough.

I paid a grand for my 03 Ibiza sport pd130. 50mpg, quick, reliable, fairly comfy and an ok spec. Goes from A to B and has some legs. Granted it ain't the prettiest car ever but who gives a toss lol

My mate owns a 53 plate Fabia vrs he got it with 50k miles and got it mapped and a few other bits and made 182bhp and 311lb ft. It's now on 160k miles he gives it constant abuse I've been in it chewing the arses of mk2 rs' and wrx imprezas ect, still on original clutch and turbo. Bomb proof apart from the shitty interior that's falling to bits, door locks and windows don't work, seals leak ect but all round impressive car.
I'd imagine you'd get an old one within your budget

I got my 2002 merc A210 AMG for £1200. A small car so ideal for the city centre but the 2.1 AMG tuned engine gives it a good turn of speed. Surprisingly roomy inside and well speced and able to surprise many and is something a bit more unusual. The seats all unclip and the floor is flat right through turning it into a little van when needed.
