If its not a siren then it may be a charcoal canister for the emissions

I remember when I first took apart my old Escos, Everything I took off it I thought was the Tracker!

so what is it then?

 

The charcoal absorbes the vapours given off by the fuel in the tank. When the car is started a purge valve opens under certain conditions (controlled by the ECU) and the vapours are sucked into the inlet manifold and burnt.

aaahh.. so that poxy silver solenoid thing that keeps clicking down by the inlet manifold next to the map sensor is something to do with this aswell !!!

Yup, thats the purge valve

The ECU sends a PWM signal to the valve turning it on and off (the clicking noise)

It's not just fitted to large turbo cars.

I removed the same filter from my small turo escort, its almost half a kilo!!!

If you like?
Cut the rubber hoses, remove the box.
plug the hose going back to the fuel tank.
cut the hose going to the sensor, leave the sensor connected, the ECU looks for it.

i "had" one of those on my mk6, the hoses just went to my inlet manifold, dont remember a solenoid tho...

anyway, its on the floor of my garage somewhere now

 

all it needs is an ally cover to bling it up a bit,or carbon fibre
