Best way to keep coil over threads clean/rust free?

As above, I've cleaned and painted my cool overs, how do I stop them getting all shitty again?
What's the best thing to use? Some spray oil like wd40? Or spray lube?

Waxoyl, grease etc etc
Or just never drive it.
Wax will keep the threads always usable, as will grease, but it can then attract stones etc which may need cleaned off first before adjustment. But the wax would keep them so adjustment should always be easy
