There is no requirement to have a cat, just to pass the emission tests relevant to the year of the car (engine), if you can Pass these without a cat then that's fine

How would this affect an insurance claim? If for example a car with a decat fitted had a crash and the insurance company recovered it and noticed that the cat had been removed would this invalidate your insurance policy even if you could produce a valid MOT certificate?

See the terms of your policy, if it states you have to declare mods then that's what you have to do.

You sure about that? My Saff failed its MOT as it had the cat removed. Didn't have one when I bought it, but when I had it tested, turns out Ford registered it with a cat, and the law changed so if it was fitted with a cat from factory, it needed one for test

I thought cars registered before August 1992 didn't have to have one? Mines not got one, never been a problem so far!?

Method of inspection.

On spark ignition engine vehicles that qualify for a full catalyst emissions test and all compression ignition vehicles check the presence of catalytic converter(s) and particulate filter(s). Note: To ascertain whether a spark ignition engine vehicle qualifies for a full catalyst test, use the flow charts in Section 7.3.C disregarding the result of the Basic Emissions Test.

Reason for failure.

A catalytic converter or particulate filter missing where one was fitted as standard.

And it goes further than that too,the mot only scratches the surface. Going by construction and use,it is an offence to make any changes to the emissions system and modify it so it no longer meets the cars emission type approval.

As an example, Any cosworth with an open modified breather is technically illegal, they were produced with closed breathers to reburn breather gasses to meet the type approval requirements for emissions.

The mot has changed recently, I'm pretty sure it was always in there it needed to have one fitted though, but the construction and use regs have always been that way, that's why roadside checks are far more dangerous for modified cars as they are not using the mot standard and not many people are familiar with the far more stringent construction and use regs.

Mk2 fiestas didn't have cats unless somebody has put one on, if so take it off as didn't require one.

If you can see its actually gone then they fail, if its been gutted but still passes smoke test then no problem.

They'll have expensive bills when it's added to the test.

There have already been notices about it over here, but as it's limited to a visual inspection to see if it has been removed, it's a difficult one to enforce.
Most try and discretely cut the box open and weld it shut again so it appears the OEM unit is still there.
