Private plate & Tax selling my car help.
Hi all
I have been driving for 22 years and got a private plate for my 40th last year which was all sorted for me so all I needed to do was put it on my car.
I am selling my car now so how do I transfer it so I get to keep my private plate and put it on the car I am buying and how how do I put my current car back on its original plates?
Also....How does Tax work these days as I paid 6 months up front online.....But it seems you cant sell a car with tax on anymore and I am 2 months in to my 6 months of Tax?
Any help would be great,
Thanks in advance.

I'm Finding My Feet Here Now
Not sure about the complete process for the plate, I think if you already have a new car you can just apply to transfer if not I believe you have to put it on retention.
As for the tax I believe when you send the log book off the dvla automatically refund it you. But if you are 2 months and 1 day into your tax they will only refund you 3 months instead of 4.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
Ring DVLA, I had to do the same thing and can't remember the process now but they explained it and sent me relevant paperwork.
As above tax is automatically refunded now.

To transfer your plate straight to another car you need to fill out the v317 form which can be found on the DVLA website and send it off with £80 and a copy of your MOT certificate.
Tax is simple, when you sell your car you will be automatically refunded for any full months tax that are remaining which can take up to 6 weeks to hit your account. When buying your new car, you now have the options of paying monthly by direct debit, and the usual 6/12 months.

All above is about right, one thing to note if you transfer to new car you will need to keep both cars until log books are returned and dvla say you should keep both for a further two weeks so they can check it all out if they require, easiest way is put it on retention, all the information you need is on Gov.uk

Excellent help and advice, thank you all
This new tax scheme seems a bit of a scam and more complex than how it used to work.

It's not that bad really.
Sell a car with tax on it, no tax for the buyer. But till the DVLA get the log book it's still taxed so gives the new buyer a couple of days grace for day insurance or whatever to drive home as it's still legally taxed.
As a buyer it's shit. I bought my truck on the 21st of Jan. And it wasn't taxed at all so couldn't even get it to my drive and wait till the 1st of March.
And at £500 a year that sucks!
