Default Insurance for a 17 year old - a few questions to be answered

A few questions since I ought to be sorting out insurance for cars that im considering buying. Hopefully some of you guys will be able to help me out here:

I've heard a few stories about creating replicas of RST's and the like(with smaller 1.3 engines) but people still having to pay the insurance premium for a real RST with a 1.6 engine; as the company goes by the idea people will nick it if it looks like a real one.

Is this true? Hope not, im considering making an RST rep.

Is there much of a difference in price for a 17 year old between a fully comp premium and a 3rd party one - same excess on both obviously? If there is a difference how much is this?

If i do buy something like an RST are there any significant discounts if I am the member of an enthusiasts club?

If you have any good websites for car insurance i'd be grateful if you would post'em up.

I have just been insured as a 17 yr old driver....being a guy you probably wouldnt want to be with ladybird insurance, lol....
I found fully comp and tpft was about 300-450 difference....
Go onto confused.com and fill in the forms will give you lots of quotes....thats how I found mine.....

Good luck!

AGAR-COSWORTH,

Im more or less the same situation...

Im 18, but no no claims, just a years driving experiance.

Had a few quotes on RST's, not got below £1800 fully comp. which i cant really afford.
Third party ive had a quote of £1500 from Admiral, which is still alot..
Classic insurance seems the way to go though, if you can find a company that offers it. (I found Alexander Forbes to be alright) They quoted me £1200 on an S2 RST, standard 132bhp, and standard exterior. Although that was with a limited milaege of 5000miles per year which isn't alot

Don't build a replica though mate you'll have every saxo driver in the town claiming they "smoked an RS turbo last night" as they know no different

Good luck with it all anyway, if you find any good companies, give me a shout! Cheers.

at 17 insuring any cars gunna be hell! i would say ur lookin at about £1000-1300 on ur first car, maybe less if u have cat1 + off street parking etc. the problem ur gunna find is if u want to modify the car at all the insurance company might not let u, it all depends on who u go with some companies will say u can modify the car as long as theres nothing to add bhp but ur not covered for the mods unless u request to be covered for them.
some companies will say if u mod the car at all ur insurance will be void (a mate of mines going thru something simular just over some side repeaters!!)

get some quotes from performance specialiest insurers like adrian flux HIC etc they seem to be the best around at the mo.

the thing is with a classic policy is that u dont get any no claims bonus's with it so its probably just best to bite the bullet and take the heavy insurance bills for the first yr or so then u can move onto something serious

I've just insured my 17 year old as a named driver on a 1999 1.0 Saxo, using my max no claims and 20 years clean driving record, and living in a rural area.

Best premium I got was £661. Next best was £1700. Insuring the car in his name saw quotes START at £1700 and the worst was well over £4000 (I don't think they wanted to take on a 17 year old!) By comparison, the wife's Escort 1800 is £220 fully comp, only difference is no 17 year old on that policy, so I don't think any replica is going to be that affordable.

However, one other thing I learned is that what anyone else pays is pretty much immaterial. Too many factors like age, experience, driving record, the individual company's attitude to risk/young drivers/modifications, even your postcode all impact the price.

at the moment, i'm under my mums name with Diamond for Women

there is 6 years NCB on there, i'm 19 and the 2nd driver. 8k a year, on a S13 200SX (169bhp - RWD), paying £560

i switched from my Mk5 XR3i Cabriolet 130PS to the 200SX and the difference was £18

i am able to get insured on my own name for around £1500 which is cheap considering i've built up no NCB and its a group 17 car.

i'm going to try this Alexander Forbes for a classic policy as i wanna chop it in for an S1 RST i think.

when i was 17 i had a Mk1 Escort and couldn't get insured under a classic policy, they all said 21.

I think the best thing would be to drive a low power shitter for a year or so and build up some all important NCB, save abit of cash each week and after a year you should then be able to afford the insurance on a real RST abit easier

Hi mate.

I am 17 and am currently driving a 1.4 Escort. This cost me £1500 tpft. This was with the pass plus course (Which should be available through you local driving school) which reduced my insurance by about £800. Fully comp to insure me was about £2200. I have run a few quotes through for when my insurance is up for renewal and with a years no claims & my pass plus, i can insure anything up to a 1.8 for pretty much the same price as the 1.4 (Excludin turbos, and is on tpft ). So like someone else said you might be better getting a shitter for a year, then buying an Escy GTi or something, have it for a year and grab yourself a proper RST. Thats what i plan to do anyway

Thanks for all the helpful replies:

Over the weekend im going to work at getting quotes for a range of cars, now considering putting it under my mums name (instead of me being the mian driver) she better not kerb any alloys i fit I don't really think its going to be work my paying over a grand insurance a year for any car at my age - im currently insured as another driver on a 51 plate 1.2 clio - that only added 600quid to the current premium.

I'll see how the quotes goe as concerns xr2i's etc - if they aren't to my liking i think i'd still like to buy a 1.3 shitty and build a rep - half the idea of me getting my own car was to gain more mechanical experience, as i don't think my mum and dad would take kindly to me tinkering with thiers

Now theres an idea, the 50 quid snotter could even be left sat on the driveway not being used whilst the bonus's build up

One thing to remember about putting it on your parents insurance is that you still ahve to declare you are the main driver. If it comes to a claim they WILL use any way to avoid paying out.

and i think u will find in the small print something about only to the value of insured vehicile
so ya cars get a shed escort for £50 and drive round in a escort cozzy
basicly if ya carnt aford to insure it dont buy it dont live beond ya means
i canrt see why a rst is so much to insure there not that fast by 2days normal cars
look ar marco in his tdi focus left loads of rst n fezzas on track for dead in a heavy estate

to insurance companies tho, it's just a badge, a name and a reputation

and a way of making as much £££ as they can out of dedicated enthusiasts
