Default Best Oil For A Cosworth - Response from Opie Oils

I know my 3 door has always had Castrol RS 10w60 Fully synthetic oil in, then recently I changed my Oil to Millers CFS 10w60. I might now try the Silkolene Pro S 10w50 Oil

I contacted Simon/Guy at Opie Oils (Oil Man) to ask about recommended oils for a Cosworth, and this was their reply -

For the Cosworth we would recommend the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 ester/pao synthetic. Esters assist the additive pack in a motor oil formulation because they are surface-active (electrostatically attracted to metal surfaces), so they help to reduce wear and friction.

They are fluid at very low temperatures and at high temperatures they are very chemically stable and have low volatility (don’t evaporate away).

They also help to prevent hardening and cracking of oil seals at high temperatures making them ideal for tuned turbo engines.

The reason we don’t recommend the 10w-60 is because when it gets hot it is as thick as some gear oils, this is then taking energy away from the engine just to pump it around. I cant speak for the Millers but the Castrol is not even a true synthetic but a hydrocracked mineral oil so will not have the lubrication or shear qualities of the true synthetics.

I was well impressed with the response, and am getting some oil at the weekend to try in my Vectra GSi, and will buy some Silkolene for the Cossie.

Simon and Guy are our resident oil Guru's

I use the Silkolene Pro S myself and have to be honest and say it seems to be the best all round oil ive used to date, going off things like noise when cold, oil pressure when very very hot and of course oil consumption, it certainly seems to score quite highly

i also put some fully synth Silkolene g/box oil in and that helped matters no end. i don't think i'd use anything else in my car now. impressed with their oil.

I get my stuff from them too, and do you know what the best thing is.

I asked what the best was, and then decided I wanted Castrol anyway, and there was no pressure.

I was given all the information, and was delivered a top service.

The reason we don’t recommend the 10w-60 is because when it gets hot it is as thick as some gear oils
Oils thicken when they get cold, so someone is a little confused....

That probably means it's VERY thick to start with...

Default Oil viscosity

The 10 represents the thickness or viscosity when cold, the 50 is the thickness when at full operating temperature. Hence why Simon/Guy say its as thick as some gear oils when hot.

You need fluidity when cold for protection and circulation purposes.

With thickness and stability as a paramount when hot.

I'd suggest changing your oil every 3000 miles on a Cosworth so as to refresh the system regularly.

I'm no oil guru, but I'm told that modern day synthetics are the way to go, due to their superior chemical and additive properties.

I'll give Silkolene a go, I've got nothing to loose!!
