Doesnt really matter what types you use, if you dont actually know what you're listening for, none will work !
And simple DIY ones are bloody good if you're hearing is good and you do know what to listen for.
Failing that, you're going to need to spend a few hundred in a set that has some detection ability and warnings built in. But even these will still require some manual calibration and listening to ensure they are set correctly.

You'll need to work out the base frequency and how that'll alter with RPM too, for an amateur the homemade cans (with the pickup put in the correct place of course) are best. Is it an N/A or FI car your mapping?

Frequency is directly linked to bore diameter, that's usually the only "knock" parameter most of these detectors require
