Needing a new set of rubber for my track car and just wondering what folks are using.
Ive seen the emergence of 'budget' tyre brands with road legal track day tyres- anyone used the and what like?
Theres the Federal RS R, Nankang NS 2R, or Im i better off going for the likes of R888 or yokis.

I would stick with the R888 or decent brands personally. I used the Dunlop 808r (I think they were called that) and I was amazed at just how good they were. The Michelin pilot cup sports are good too.
I have not had good experiences with budget tyres

Used R888's on the pug for a few years and found them really good, I bought a set of nangkang NS 2R for the focus and have used them once on track, grip seemed good on the dry track but got a bit of tyre squeal in the corners

The NS2R's seem to have some rave reviews on the interweb, but they don't appear to grip from cold and need a couple of laps in them to work well.
I happen to have some for sale rather cheap if you fancy trying them out.

Another vote for the nankangs did me 15 laps around the ring and were really predictable once upto temperature. I opted for the 180 compound which is a little harder

Toyo R1R are decent, I've not had it mine on track but the grip is massively better than my previous yokohama's, its stopped leaving 11's down the roads.

As Ridgey said, The Federal RS-R, (which is what i run on the saph) is not a true track tyre, more of a half way house between road and track. I'd put the Toyo R1-R in the same group.
Nankangs get some good reviews but ive never personally used them.I was going to try a set on the saph but they dont seem to do a 215x40r17 for the front.
On the 205 and clio rally cars we have always got on well with Yokos although now use proper rally moulded slicks, and the difference in grip again is amazing.

I have a comparison for you for pirelli p1 vs toyo r888, pirelli p1 0-100 mph 10.7 seconds, toyo r888 0-100 mph 7.3 seconds, no alterations were made to the car except tyres changed, I know p1 aren't track tyres but even so it amazed me at how much a proper tyre will stick to the road with alot of power rwd

Given the price, they'd need to perform miracles !!
And are the DZ03's not all hard compound ?
I've tried quite a few tyres, mostly colder usage as opposed to sustained track use. But out of Pilot Sport cups, Federal FZ201, Kumho's in medium and super soft....I still say regular GG 888 is bloody hard to beat, and they give decent service life.

Was at the autosport show today talking to tyre manufacturers, and toyo were telling me that the new noise regs for road tyres mean that the current r888 will not be sold as a road legal tyre in about 2 yrs time.
I think the regs came in about October last year, if the tyre didn't meet the max noise limit then the company could sell for a further 30 months, then after that not sell as road legal.
Fortunately for toyo they have just launched a R888R, which does meet the noise regs (by chance), also this tyre last longer before over heating, which was my biggest gripe with the R888.

Just launched....but they say not available until around March, and typically talk like that means several months later is closer to reality
R1R's are no longer made either.

the supra had 295/30/19 rears only and was noticeable but not to bad.
but the gtr has 285/35/20 fronts and 315/30/20 rears and its clearly noticeable, ryan mentioned to me as soon as he fitted them he could hear the difference and they were needed to get the power down.

I guess the wider they go there is always going to be more noise.
Still, given they arent a mainstream tyre, it is just nonsense when there are some horrendous tyres out there from China in every respect.
