Default Can i put a different gearbox on a 2006 focus? i have codes.

Hi, so i have a customers 2006 1.8 petrol focus. the gearbox has blown, bell housing smashed from the diff exploding.

the part number for the box is 4m5r 7002 nc

the cheapest one i can find is about 700 pounds on ebay, however there are loads of other gearboxes with slightly different part numbers for a hell of a lot cheaper.

for example. 2006 2.0l petrol part number 4m5r 7002 vc.

will it fit and work and whats the differences.

called ford but the just said, "computer says no".

thanks

The gearbox is mtx75 on the 1.8 and I'm nearly sure the 2.0 focus is the same type. Ford won't say has they just work off part numbers. I would try find a low miler in a breakers yard as it should be cheaper than those ebay prices.

The 1.8 uses the ib5 and not the mtx75 which is easily recognisable from the pull up reverse, and you should be ok using any ib5 from a focus of that era.HTH

be careful with gear ratios, weve just done new clutch and second hand gearbox on our astra dti work van box listed as correct on ebay for £60, great box but 70 mph is now 3400 rpm in our diesel astra van now

Thanks for your replies,
I am aware that the gearbox in the vehicle is an ib5, but how do I know if one I'm looking at is an ib5?

Is it a general rule that if it looks the same it will fit, but just have different ratios?

Anyone know if a box from a 1.6 sport will fit? The part number is 3m5r7002nc so there's a 3 instead of a 4 at the beginning?

Thankyou

It should do as long it is from a petrol version, the ratio will probably differ slightly. Just check the bolt pattern and the starter motor position is in the same location cause they can vary.

We've had this problem before. There's one box that's a pain in the arse to get hold of. Where is the starter in your box? Does it bolt flat onto the block like a transit diesel? There the ones that are bloody expensive. Same as the fiesta st box I believe.

As Bryan says above the box with the starter at the front is a cunt to find and people charge top whack for a good one, done a few. But in answer to your question, if your starter is a normal fitment and not the 'transit' type fitment then yeah most boxes will go in just ratios that differ. It was only last week fitted a box from an 02 focus to an 07 one, was customer supplied btw we're not tight with parts to make more money
