If you're considering taking on a build like this , my advice would be to ask people who build these type of cars for a living or those who have built cosworth conversions themselves . Especially where costs are concerned .
Anyone thinking they can have a complete running finish car for Ł12k is very much mistaken - if you look at a Ł20k budget for a finished conversion you won't be far away . Best of luck

Im suprised no body has slated this conversion like people did ages ago on another thread.

I do like a good mk3/4 cossie converted escort.

Look at Cutch.s his must be one of the best converted escorts ever done.

My Advice is find someone who is a ford nut and has done this before.
1. You will get a better job as they like what their doing
2. Costs will be a lot lower due to no company overheads.
3. A company will only give you a estimate and it usually ends up more.
4 Finished projects that come out of home workshops are finished better.
5. Many projects don't see the end in a resto company due to number 3.

A good job will take time.

100% agree mate

tere seems to be a couple of ways of tackling this from removing full floor and innerwings to just removing the gearbox tunnel .

which is the best way would you guys reckon?

I would use MDV Specialist Engineering, www.mdvse.com or look them up on Facebook to see some of their builds

If I was to do one I'd use just the tunnel and rear floor for the pick up points.

At some point I have been roped in to do a Cortina 4x4 all the stuff is there but I need to get mine done first.

If you use the whole floor you will end up sitting slightly off centre to the steering wheel.

They sit closer to the doors either side by about 15-20mm in the front, I've moved the steering column to match in mine. If you use the Sierra rear end you end up moving the rear seat bench to far forward and the rear back rest would sit about 100 mm or so away from the parcel shelf, hence I only used the front half to make the interior a better fit.

If it's having no interior then your ok.

All the shells I have converted and built fit seats no problem in front and back. Also Steering is in correct place.

Most importantly the shell and geometry is straight after the work has been done.

The silver rwd s1 I built was the easiest way to convert a mk3/4.
All the ones I have done have threads of the builds on other sites. Worth reading for help.

Didn't yours use the full standard floor, bulkhead and inner wings etc but with just a transmission tunnel add with a modified rear floor though???

I left a message on your phone today mate. As I said MJ racing did mine and the conversion was spot on, they also did it for a good rate and had it painted in house too. He knows his stuff about cossies, you should see his collection! Been trying for years to get him to pull them all out for the ultimate dream garage spread in fast ford....and Scott mcminn from Kilmarnock can do it too. Both are exceptional fabricators

There's a thread on the s1 forum where a lad cut up an evo and grafted that into the s1 she'll.didn't take him a lifetime to finish and it looked really tidy once done.

These builds can spiral out of control,

The big money is after the shell fab is done and painted imo,

Devil is in the detail and I've done a lot of work myself

Totally agree, mine was a going to be 12k build, I've spent double that and I'm still way of completion. I've also not put a price in for my own labour which is hundreds of hrs.

Part of the trouble has been the idea that it's my once in a lifetime big build, I've set the bar high and I've ended up with a mindset of wanting the best and do it once do it properly - the cost has, as Mark said, spiralled out of control!

I have seen some info to suggest my pug 205 4x4 was Ł36k all in when it was built in the 90s, I am not sure if true as that was big money back then.

Oddly I have spent over Ł15k since owning it.
