....to your car are you?
ive owned my FRS for coming up to 7 years now, the longest ive ever owned a car.
ive always had the itch for something else, but when it came down to it, i talked myself out, or bought a second car, and the FRS has remained. even when i bought my house i kept the car......
at what point should you just cut the cord, the car has been faultless but i keep convincing myself not to sell cos no-one will buy it, (mileage etc)
each year i tax it, insure it, spend money on bits for it (which i hoard and never fit ) and then lock it back up to not really drive it
anyone else in the same boat lol ???

Yep, me too. Had my S1 for 20 years, owes me a fortune. Seriously thought about selling a few times over the last few years but I think she'll be staying. Whatever I replaced her with would cost a lot more and not be as eye catching or look as good in the garage.

there just some part of my brain that thinks the money is better in steel, plastic and rubber in the garage than sitting in a bank.
plus it will hopefully appreciate, ignoring the hundreds spent on tax, insurance and servicing

Dont get me wrong, I've blown tens of thousands over the years on modifying and tuning. Money most would say is wasted as you never get it back. I've enjoyed what I was doing at the time but once I get bored I move on to something else.

I'm the same sadly.
My fiesta turbo has been sat gutted awaiting a resto for 4yrs now and it dont matter how hard I try to admit defeat and sell it I just cant.
Its a solid genuine shell and I know id never find another but I just cant find the time, money, will power to get on it or too sell.
It is a real waste of a classic, but I'm not prepared too sell for peanuts as most dont have a clue how too see the good in the moss covered wood so its a basket case..hence I don't sell.
I hate being sentimental ffs.

Usually the interest for my goes right after getting the car restored so its mint, then I usually break it.
The fun for me is finding a car be it knocking on a door, out raking about or off eBay,finding the parts, winning auctions on eBay etc.
After it's done and I drive it that's usually when I lose interest.
Had my 16i since march I think and almost put it up for sale in October as it was almost a new car with all the bits I managed to buy, nearly everything was correct, radio, mats, brackets, suspension, tyres etc but I was bored but instead I sold my other 16i and the pile of parts I had collected just in case and spent the money modding it so it was actually the car I wanted instead of the car that ford built.
It's not finished yet as I'm still upgrading the brakes and stereo but I now go into the garage just to look at it and take in all the work I have done to it which is very rewarding.
I don't think I'll sell it now and last week I bought an escort cab I built years ago but sold, that won't be going either unless I need the money for something more important like the house or family.

I bought my s2 turbo when i was 18, I'm 26 now and the thing has barely been on road for a year in all that time, I've thrown silly money at it and I'm always tinkering and changing stuff, sometimes i think f*ck it I'm breaking it for parts but then ill spend a few hours working on it again and all love comes back!
Don't think ill ever get rid unless as said above family or something similar needs funds!

maybe my mood will change when the weather warms up......

i could always find bits to do on the saff or the RST's that ive owned over the years, they almost encouraged tinkering, searching ebay to replace broken bits

Thats what I like up rating bits making it faster I enjoy doing that it gives me some thing to do plus as I'm getting older now it gives me something to do with my brother as he likes the car as well. Plus a fair few of my mates have cosworths so always mates to chat with about them
really tempted to turn the focus into a sort of project to get on with.....

Ive had my saff nearly 9 years. Like james says it our hobbies. Yeh we could have newer performance cars but it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things.
Its only money. You cant take it with you when your gone.

I once was extreamly skint and i was going to sell my escos, i even wrote out the add on pistonheads but when it came to actually submitting the add i just couldnt do it, so i remaind skint but muddeled on through. Ive had it 10 years and i now have no intention of selling it ever it just sits under cover in the garage where it belongs.

Don't think I get attached to cars like I used to. Really the only one I miss is my XR3i. I wouldn't have another one, but if that one came round again I'd probably buy it. I'd have another S1 but at the same time I don't miss either of the S1's I used to have. My last three cars have all been to serve a purpose, and my current I've had a little over three years now, and much as I love it, I'd sell it if I fancied a change.

I'm attached to my fiesta even though its a rusty piece of shit mk4 and I'm not fit to drive it. But its my 1st car and I just cant stand the thought of parting with it, well, not least till I'm fit and healthy again. Cant see me parting with it though, even though its worthless.

Think that's the bit alot of folk dont get, it may be worthless as a vehicle too them but sentiment is a powerful thing..
My turbo should be in the abandoned thread, I'm ashamed its rusting away but I cant sell it.
Beauty is as they say...rotten or not hahaha

I've had this one for 4 years which for me is quite a long time and often think about selling it but always talk myself out of it . Spend a small fortune on it that I'd never get back so think why bother just keep it and enjoy it .
The only car I'd sell it for would be an Escos or a 3dr but for what I'd realistically get for the money after selling mine would buy a dog of either of the above .
No brainier really I'm keeping her for the foreseeable future

I guess u could say attached or just too sensible, so many friends I know buy and sell cars only to go and buy the same model again months or years later, often in worse conditions and for more money. I think a lot of the time it's better the devil you know as opposed to selling your car and putting it into another car you know nothing about.

I was in the same boat with my 3 door , then one day thought Sod it . got a newer car after 10 years that don't need to be locked up everyday and pampered
Do I regret it? No far from it
#27
I see your point if you want something newer and reliable, for me i'll always want something tucked away in the garage that I can meddle with, thrash, or show, and some normal daily cars as well. A daily driver is easier for me to change as it serves a different purpose.
#28
Yeah a big each to the own thing . for me I just couldn't be arsed anymore to mess about and spend money on something I just didn't use unless it was a nice day , I have my son now and there's more to life than something looking good in the garage .
All the people who say there adding value is not the case as the amount of time and money you spend on them out weights it.
I can now see a 3 door or old ford out on the road and look and say that's nice without all the hassle .

Agreed! Think I am getting to that stage in the next 5 years or so. I look at a lot of nicer marques and think they are amazing cars, but at the end of the day that's just a big pile of money sitting there, not including the running costs and annoying maintenance hassle that goes along with it!
I tend to stick with cheap cars really for that reason, never could justify 40-50k on a car.

I had my ST for 3 and a bit years and was really attached to it. Even had sleepless nights after doing a deal on it for my new car. When I dropped it off and drove the new one home it's the best thing I did, not having to worry about having a money pit on the drive and that feeling that every time you stick your toe down, what's going to break next!

I have had my 2wd Saff for nearly 21 years, spent a lot of money on it but never got bored with it and have no desire to change it. It is old school technology but I have had more problems with my low mileage Renault Laguna 2.0 estate than I have had with the Saff!
#35
I feel sorry that you no longer get a buzz from cars, but I have always been a petrol head and every car I have owned has been modified and played around with. The only regret I have is not realising years ago how much some of the cars I had would be worth now! Lotus Cortina and 1600e Uren Savage to name a couple!
#39
You are right there Glenn, my Laguna has a sensor for everything and it has been a pain in the ass! Sometimes the heater blows out cold air when its supposed to be hot, the electric windows reverse themselves so they go down when they should be going up to name a couple of things!

I'd keep my saff over any modern car lol. The saff is easy to work on fun and raw! When it had 500bhp it scared the fook out of anyone I took out in it that thought they had been in a so called fast car! Can't wait to feel what it's like with 650!
