Make sure you get the compressed thickness of the gasket before you commit to buying it.

Ive had this before on development engines we have done trying to squeeze the very last bit of CR out of nasp engines, the higher they rev the worse the contact got lol.

the Victor Reinz 1.4mm gasket compresses to 1.3mm So will still be ok.

Good idea for gaining compression, at least you knew what caused the tapping straight away. I went and bought a new head! haha

IMO 0.6mm clearance really isnt enough.

And the concerns with the piston arent bore damage. It's potentially trapped rings from the alloy taking a pounding.

How far down is the top ring ?

Piston is fine, its taken the smooth polished surface away but it's still totally flat, only damage i can see is on #1 in that close up photo, it's the smallest of digs and is on top, hasn't shown any signs of scratching the bore.

Will get the 1.4mm gasket, 0.7mm clearance should be fine, that's the clearance on a standard head after all.

Yes, if i wanted to go and buy a cometic gasket i'd have a huge choice. But the money doubles for a Cometic!

how much is a cometic headgasket what £70, im not being funny but if you cant afford that can you afford to be building the motor ?

Ringland should be fine.

If you could get a 1.6mm gasket, it would be much better.

Or another option, machine 0.5mm into the head the diameter of the piston. Unusual, but it would give you the clearance needed to be safe

Going to go for the 1.4mm. Should be more than enough clearance. PrimePerformanceEngineering confirmed the crush height at 1.3mm which has given me good confidence that this will solve the tapping.
Picking up a set of Kent Cams Valve springs this weekend too. So if anyone is in the market for 106gti springs with 2mm washers let me know. I though't id eliminate any other doubts which i might have!

It may solve the tapping, it does not neccasrily eliminate the risk of the pistons hitting the heads

You've only giving yourself barely over 20thou clearance, and those are cold static measurements.

When warm and at higher rpm's...that could very easily drop to almost zero.

True! I wasn't worried until I started reading about rod stretch at high rpm!
I'm buying a 1.5mm Cometic gasket this weekend from Burtons. Getting it at a good deal for £67!
I won't be having any mad rev limit anyway. 6800 hard cut
