Default Best 4x4 jeep for family car?

After my shogun blew up ive been looking at other cars on ebay! Looked at defender 110 but unsure if its suitable as an everyday family car?

Defenders are a bit too utilitarian for the road and the drive is pure old school offroader so nothing like the modern generation 4x4s which are tuned mostly towards decent road holding.

Sure if you lived in the sticks on shit roads and regularly got snowed in etc then fine, but otherwise any of the modern softroaders will be more than adequate and drive on the road so much better for the 99% of the time youll use the car.

Volvo xc90 "r" models.
Everything you need in a motor.
Plenty of rangeys at that price but it seems bit and miss if you get a good one.
I'm getting an xc90 next but about 1/2 your lowest budget point, about £8k or so. Still torn between a d5 or a t5, t6 to be avoided at all costs as the gearbox is pish. Apparently d5 does 35+ mpg but very expensive when it fails yet the t5 is super reliable as its a lpt version of the more familiar 5 pot but will obviously be a bit thirsty.

Land cruiser would be my first choice then a Nissan Patrol. Had my time in X5, ML and Cayenne and probably wouldn't do it again.

As Much as I like the look of the RR's, I'd have to be given one either free or very cheap to own one. Just personal opinion.

Not really considered a Volvo or a Jeep. Although they might be a good all rounders, they look like they were born from a car crash.

stereotypical shite trotted out mostly by over protective mothers/parents like "better view of the road"
"more metal in a crash"
"need somewhere to keep the baby pram etc"
"need to carry all his friends"
"need a 4x4 for winter" -or better just learn to fucking drive you mongs.

also the usual "keeping up with the jones" and the snobbery/image reasons for having one.

Id bet no family with 2 kids or less NEEDS one. And if theyclaim they do, they are lying and confusing wants with needs. A lot do that these days with luxury and non essential stuff. Just because youve got used to having it doesnt mean you need it.

People managed perfectly fine in the 80,s with 2 kids and a 2 door fiesta etc.

Bigryrs's location of Montrose means he has far more reason to own a 4x4 than those down south thats for sure lol

I would go with a disco 3/4 or a land cruiser

Despite driving a merc ml and looking to get a volvo xc90 you are spot on!!!!

My "excuse" is that its good for towing (not that I really tow anything) and I live in the country so if it snows I'd hate to be stuck ( I live in South Wales and it never really snows).

Truth be told we just like driving them, they don't make sense at all but they make perfect sense if that makes any sense?
99% of the time, you don't need one but the 1% that you do you can't think of anything else to replace it.
I agree a lot of it is snobbery, a decent Audi Quattro estate can do everything better but I think it just boils down to personal preference.

One thing that is NOT acceptable though are 4x4 "style" vehicles like Nissan quashquai, anything fwd that claims to be a 4x4 like base level evoques, Audi q3's etc. Totally pointless.

Unless you are going off road I wouldn't get one at all and would simply get a good estate car. But it is YOUR cash and YOUR choice

I've got an e70 x5 and love it. Can't comment on the others but I would definitely recommend one. But just be aware the mpg is shocking lol.

And I don't need one in the slightest. I want one lol.

Got 2 kids and planning on having more! like doing work to my house so ive always got stuff in the back of the shogun that wouldnt fit in an estate car! also do quite a bit of wheeling and dealing so im always moving stuff around! love going camping as well so a 4x4 ticks all boxes for me! my mother has an a4 estate and the boot space is pathetic! no room in the car at all! i would rather have a crash in a shogun than a fiesta lol. Ive done things with my shogun i couldnt in a smaller car or estate car so no need to change to a smaller car!

Shogun has had the engine replaced and the wife picked it up today so at least il have something to drive when i get home! cheers for all the replies! seems to be mixed reviews on different 4x4's i just love defender 110's though! i dont do motorway miles or commute to work so im not really bothered about long distance driving.
