i'm in a silly mood i think

i think i want to get rid of my 300bhp, RWD, comfortable 200SX and get a shonky old Mk3 Escort.

i wanted a S1 RST before i got my S13. insurance put a stop to it (but not a S13 - can't work it out!)

i'm now thinking of getting a S1 Turbo again (if i can sort insurance) or a RS1600i. would be standard, or mild mods.

if i was to get a Escort i'd want a nice clean example. my budget would be whatever i got for the S13 - should be about 3k considering the spec. that should be plenty enough for a nice RSi, but what about a S1. i see lots going for 5k+, i suppose 3k would get me a ropey one?

would i fuck up and de-value a Mk3 scort by using it everyday, even through the winter. (do about 8k a year) wear and tear, plus extra mileage on it.

IMO my S13 is far superior in every department that both of them, but i'm being drawn back to an Esocrt becasue i'm a Ford boy and want another Escort. i like my S13, but i loved my old Escorts.

opinions? good move? appreciating classics, retro cool, good scene OR stupid move? shit load slower, FWD, girls think they are shit , hard to come buy some parts, etc.

imo mate not being funny at all, but i think a S1 looks a lot better than a old style 20osx somthing classic about em

imo aswell if you kept the car well manited and prtected from the dread rust why not use it all year?

i think so too, thats why i want one. i love them. i do think an S1 is inferior to a S13 with 300bhp in all/most other areas though.

its not about preformance though. i just like them

japs the way to go and if i had the cash (as much as i love my escort) id go jap aswell.

i think thats an illusion. it is with S13's anyway. they are easily as much trouble, regarding blown turbos, car won't start, etc. if you saw the S13 technical section on SXOC you'd realise its not all fun and games.

that said, all the hard work is behind me for my car. its now reliable, had a new turbo, engine rebuild/freshen up, new brakes all around, etc. its a good car now, selling it after putting so much money into it doesn't seem to bright.

i think there is more to it than just a car though.

if i wrote it off tomorrow, i'd be like "o well, never mind, just get another shell". if i wrote off my old Mk5 Cab with 32k on it, i'd have been really depressed about it

although i like my S13 and get alot of satisfaction out of it (pissing on Scoobys, M3's, TVR's, Porkers and all the other bollocks) i think i'd prefer looking out the window at night and seeing a minty fresh S1 or RSi looking back at me.

As Escy says its not true that all the bumpf thats been said! they have just as much problems! Its all down to how a car has been maintain at the end of the day dont forget most of the cars on here are old to! so comparing them to a 2-3 old Evo and Scooby doesnt compare

early 200SX's do rust quite bad, but i wouldn't have said worse than a Mk3 Escorts.

i wouldn't want a rotter of an S1 anyway. would ideally be looking for one thats had a resto or has led a sheltered life. i wouldn't want a dog that needs work. not sure if a 3k budget would get me a good un though?

altho i do rate the jap cars as they seem to make engines perform ( 100bhp from 1.3's for example) but its true they do suffer from the same problems as fords do its just ppl are comparing 20-30 yr old fords to 5-10 yr old jap cars so of course the japs cars r gunna come up on top for reliabilty.

but one thing alot of jap cars lack is soul, they just dont compare to that "it" factor cars like the s1 cossies etc have which is a major reason y ppl go for a 130bhp fwd underseering rust bucket

i think that s1's can b ok everyday cars if theyre set up right, not running silly power and not ragged everywhere but that doesnt mean ur not gunna have things go wrong after all it is a old car.

speaking of jap engines making good power, just seen the Moto GP review and the Yamaha in line 4 cylinder (999cc) makes 245BHP and the Honda is making more!
Must put the Honda V-tec engine in my Ford and then turbo it

Although I love S1's, you're off your head to think about using one as an everday car. Apart from the fact it will feel like a tin hut compared to what you drive now
