Is it possible to remove a personalised registration without placing it on retention?

We are selling my wife's Mini, and not planning on getting her another car, also her reg is of her maiden name so not really relevant now. Don't want to be paying to keep it on retention possibly indefinitely or at least for a fair few years.

I was hoping that I could just relinquish the number plate and have the original VRM put back on (hoping this might mean less or no fee, but knowing the DVLA I'll not hold my breath!!!)

I think u can transfer it straight to another vehicle otherwise u have to pay retention to hold it for a year then pay again, I just been throu this last week with my plate

I think it's 80 to remove and keep it for a year then Ł30 for subsequent years retention will speak to her indoors and maybe just leave it on, knew it was too good to be true saving any money from DVLA!

No you can't, you can only transfer it or put it on retention.
Also allow to get your paper work back before the car goes as sometimes they do want to inspect the car the plate is coming off to check eg chassis/ engine numbers etc, i nearly lost my number due to this happening.

Just sell it with the Reg on if you don't want it.
Also, there is no guarantee that a vehicle will get the "original" reg back when a cherished one is taken off it.

Check it's value before deciding (Registration Transfers or Elite Registrations) and the annual retention fee is only Ł25 and can be done for up to 3 years in one go. Initial fee includes the transfer cost ready for reassignment.
