bit of an odd one LOL
i was haing a dump today round my mates and on his sink pipe work there was a big bit under where the water goes from the taps, whats it for?
i was sat there ages trying to work it out, i cant find a pic and cant get one now as im not there, does it hold water for some reason

its called a trap, and stops the smell from the drains entering your house, some a called P traps, some S traps and one like yours is called a bottle trap.
Works by holding water to prevent the smell from going any further
