Default Private plate question

I'm looking at buying a car with a private plate on it that I don't want to keep on the car.
I also have my own plate that I do want to put on it.
If I transfer my plate onto it what happens to the 1 on there now? Do I keep it on retention or do the dvla take it back?
If I wanted to keep the plate that's on there do I have to put it on retention first?
What's the quickest way to put my plate on it? That's still on my old car now. Do I send both log books off to transfer from old to new or take it off the old 1 first then put it on the new 1. Cos won't that take 6 weeks each? I don't wanna wait 3 months to put it on.

You can either transfer your plate and lose the other

Or pay £105 to put the plate thats currently onto the car onto a retention cert. (£80 for the trans £25 for the cert)
