Default Z20LET running like crap after a new cam belt fitted.

Hello,

So my brothers Z20LET is running like shit (not going over 50mph or giving ANY power out) and this is after he had a camber kit put on. He has been told the air flow meter is broke and needs a new one or the wiring needs replacing.

By unplugging it will the car run OK so to find out if its the sensor and not the wiring?

Dont want to spend a lot on a sensor if its the wiring.

Cheers.

if you unplug it and it runs ok then 99% of the time its the afm. the fact it has just had cambelt is possibly coincedence

Maf failure is very common on these engines. Definitely worth checking the wiring and in some cases adding a earth to the existing maf gnd can fix a wiring fault. ( not done the latter but worked on a fair few where that has been done )

You might not even not any difference by disconnecting the MAF on these, particularly Vauxhalls in general, unlike Fords. But they are very common for going.

Was the same when unplugged, got another one and the same.

The wiring was cut about to be made longer so removed that and put new in still the same.

It gets to 2500 rpm then it used to go like a rocket now it holds back and won't do a lot.

Does the ECU have to be reset?

As the cam belt was changed the first thing to check would be that it is timed correctly, I don't know the tolerance on these engines before valves hit pistons but it could be a few teeth out?

Well it went to courtenay sport to have the belt done and they seem to be the best at vauxhalls, he was told that there was 3 things on the ECU: p0100 air flow meter/circuit low input (was reading 0) then p0141 lamb sensor 2/low voltage and p0130 lamb sensor 1/low voltage.

One of the sensors is just off the manifold and is not plugged in anyway so i expect there to be an error but it ran fine going there.

If any of that is help lol

Time for continuity checks on wiring loom from Ecu to MAF plug. Make sure the Ecu is outputting its 5v feed to MAF, and then that reference is making it back to Ecu.

My bet is you'll find a wiring fault where they've moved he wiring around doing the cambelt.

What I will say, is I've seen a fair few show MAF codes and O2 sensor codes when timing is wrong (get loads come to me with problems after backstreet bobs have done cambelts - I work for a vauxhall main dealer) ..... But I wouldn't expect to see a 0 data read if its timing... Should still see something.

Whats wrong with them? I thought they were the ones for all vauxhall stuff? Seem to know what there on about.

He did ring them and the bloke just said that we did tell you there was something wrong and dont use it as it could melt a piston or something.

I've heard a bit of a mixed bag about them. I think Thorney Motorsport are the big players...and they also have the backing from vauxhall so mods by them don't invalidate your warranty (newer vehicles).

I honestly believe it will be a wiring fault, always common after things have been jiggled around.

How old is the car?

If you're stuck in future give me a shout, sounds like you're local and I've dealt with Vauxhalls for over 10 years.

Thats misleading on Thorneys part, they are in no way endorsed or backed by Vauxhall, or Vauxhalls warranty.

After court action, Thorney had to set up their own warranty scheme that is said to mimic Vauxhalls terms and conditions etc...

Latest warranty related message regards thorney is in archive (02/02/2009) and states that the aftermarket parts that thorney change are covered by thorney themselves, and GM will continue to cover everything else.

Ill stop dragging the thread offtopic now!! Ha.
