If you want bang for buck, the Clio is a good shout.

If you can put up with 26-28mpg, an ST220 is a good choice. Handles well, well equipped and has a lovely engine. I've had one for the last year and it's been brilliant, can't rate it highly enough.

You could probably get a 206 GTI 180 for that money now. Then there's Accord Type-R, or a Civic Type-R might be creeping into your budget.

Tbh i spose the sport models arent especially different in terms of luxury to a normal 1.2, the full fat ones have half leather and air con ect, also a few toys for a car of that type. A focus st170 would be a nicer car to drive if you just want to cruise, there a much better quality car aswell, however if you want a drivers car the clios kick their ass, and are miles quicker, imo the st170 is gutless

yea i get what you mean. the clios i have driven just felt sooo flimsy!!! gearstick moving around like a rampant rabbit haha but just having a look and there is some nice looking ones around for a good price. il go and have a test drive and see what i think. iv herd from alot of people that the st170 is lovely but just gutless!! iv also seen a few fiesta st's going for about 2k but about 110k miles or so...

I would recommend a 172 cup as there is less to wrong as they have no climate controll to go faulty ,no abs nicer wheels as standard and a nicer colour as long as you like blue. Far better than a normal 172 in my eyes and I have owned both.
Octavia vrs is a great shout nice big comfy car for day to day driving and has good performance from the 1.8 turbo.
I managed a steady 40 mpg from both my skoda and clios

well went and test drove a few cars yesterday. i did like the 172 i looked at but it needed a few bits doing inc cambelt tax etc and price just racked up. so in the end i did decide on the st170. and tbf its a nice one. done 87k got 6 months tax just on. mot till may, full miltek exhaust system fitted by AMD. new discs and pads too. loads of history. got it for 1500 and the guy chucked in £50 worth of cleaning products all new. im pretty happy with it tbh. and also i dove both the clio and the focus hard on the test drives and this focus is as fast as the clio. i was kinda shocked. anyway this is it.

For that price I would 100% say an st220. Best car I've owned and lovely to drive. I get about 26mpg around town and 36-40 mpg on motorways.

Do you sit at 50 on motorways? I never got even close to that out of mine sitting at 70.

Looks really nice mate. They are good cars just a bit greedy on fuel for what they are.
Had one a few years ago only bit of trouble I had was with the inlet manifold runner control

yea i read up on them. this one is fine... atm wont speak to soon lol. but yea it is nice it just feels solid compared to the clio doesnt feel like its just going to fall apart underneath me. only thing i dont like about the st170s is the poxy wheel centre caps the way they are loose!!! i was suprised they was all still on it. but its just because i like things to be right and it just grates me the way they are lol.

great choice. when i just seen the thread i was gona say if it was me it would be between a clio and a 170. imo a clio interior is flimsy and cheap compared to a focus and the focus handles better on the limit. but a clio is slightly faster and still a great car.

you choose well

Miles quicker?? I'm not into having a whole back and forth about it but thats a bit of an exaggeration, they handle properly and driven well will see off an ST170 but are by no means miles quicker.

The best combination is the normal 172/182 with the cup pack, unless its a toy i'd be arsed if i'd have a car without a/c in now for daily driving.

Looks like a belting deal, has this had the cambelt done already? It'll never set your world on fire, especially from a standing start but through the box it's quick enough in the real world. We've had ours just over 7 years and haven't really got any need to change it.

Throw a panel filter in and take off the resonator box.

hi mate it needs a belt but im a technician by trade so will do it this week not a problem got the locking tools already. got a continental cambelt kit and a waterpump for £65. I agree I drove both one after the other and the clio was the same speed. maybe a tad quicker off the line. but regardless off that its quick enough for and everday driver

Clio 172, 2K will get you a good one if you are patient.

40mpg on a run
comfy seats
aircon
great fun on trackdays
not slow

Perfectly small all rounder for the budget IMHO

All of the above who think that a st 170 is as quick and a Clio 172,

You have obviously never drove one. A Clio will kill the focus every where. To put into perspective for you.

I have a Clio 182 trophy, just got an exhaust and a filter. I also own a mk1 focus rs, bought it std bar an exhaust.

Much to my disgust, Clio was quicker. Not by a little bit either. Rolling start from 30 it demolished the rs to 80mph.

Different story now I've mapped it and Decat.
But still. A decent 182 will sit with an rs to legal speeds.

Just my 2p

a clio will beat a 170 for power but not so sure on the corners.

Can't coment on that as mines a cup trophy so has the fancy adjust sach dampers and a adjustable roll bar. And the rs handles pretty tidy aswell
