996 / 997 turbo

Check the radiators. There are 3, leaves and crap gets stuck and they rot. About £1100 for new uprated ones. Useful for haggling apparently!
But as has been said, amazing VFM. Supercar for Mondeo money!

Drove a 600bhp 996 GT2 and was blown away with how quick it was, but have to admit didn't like the driving position that much and it did feel a bit dated. Still, I loved everything else about it and I'm looking to buy a standard 996 turbo next year now.
Spoke to a colleague from Porsche magazine about them and the engines seem bullet proof, the only real common issues are radiators. As stated, there are 3 at the front of the car and they seem to corrode every few years. Each rad is about £300 each or more for better/uprated ones. Clutches also seem to come up a bit.
Was told not to worry too much about the X50 pack as a simple remap will take power past 450bhp on a normal one.
I was also told I should be looking to spend nearer £25k to get a good car but I plan on spending £20k and being prepared for a little work as it will run as a project car in the magazine.

These guys are near me, bought my bmw from them the other year. He was really into his porkers and has steadily moved more into them than anything else, can't blame him really, am amazed at how quickly they sell up, far faster than anything else he advertises.

Nice blokes, said if I was ever after one then give him a call and he will let me know what is what and give me advice on the one i am looking at to make sure i dont buy an iffy one. Part of the reason I bought the bm from them, very friendly no pressure attitude.

As said above the 2nd gear detent is a fairly common fault and a upgrade kit has been available for a while.
Durametric is a good system for then to check for electrical faults and can also be used to data log.
I replaced two of the front rads on mine took about 2 hours to do and cost £500.
Access to the top of the engine is tight but dropping the two rear mounts allows the engine to be dropped about 4" without disconnecting anything else.
I love this plot of a German on the Autobahn in his 996 turbo, taken over 100 miles and almost half of it is over 130 mph.
