I thought white smoke was when water was in the cyclinders

Like head gasket but could be turbo if water cooled and it's cracked?

But don't quote me

P.s I accept scrap

Have you cleaned intercooler out,? If seals went in turbo it can fill exhaust ect with oil and takes forever to burn out.

I'd go with turbo gone again or a lot of oil left over from the previous turbo.
I managed to fill a dual carriage way with thick white smoke when I had a turbo go back in the 90s.
Having said that if your car's running rally lumpy have you done a compression test just in case?

Not really would depend on how much coolant your losing, my head gaskets been gone a few weeks and it has only over heated once and that toke an hour of beening parked up from cold.

Has it got a cat? This could be full up with oil and now that's its boosting its trying to clear the exhaust system, also the cat could be blocking up causing low power, sounds like the system is still full up with oil

The turbo was reconed mate, no play in shaft n not leaky on the seals,
The car idles spot on and and drives smooth but chugs here n there!
When revving up a little trying to see if I can get rid of smoke the car does a little pop! Not a back fire just a little tut!
Ill have another comp test done on her !

The car still has cat!

On my previous s2 I blown the turbo down the motorway and filled the road with smoke I replaced turbo and let her run an after 4-5 mins all smoke cleared!

This after running for half hour and been for a drive it still whiter an thick with no sign on lightening up!

I've now noticed oil under the car........

Problem are endless

Any history with the new turbo as it may have felt like a good turbo but the sillsight be letting past, also what oil are you using as thin oils will just seep past turbo seals

Did you get the turbo from a company who recons them ? If you did and they are local get the car back to them for a warranty claim. Did you prime the turbo with oil before starting ? did you clean out the oil feed pipe ? did you clean out the cooler and all pipes ? If you have missed any of these that will blow a new turbo within a short drive.

Your car shit itself with a blown turbo before.

There will be tons of oil in the cat, the exhaust, everywhere. This WILL take some time to clear. There really isnt any way other than engine runtime putting enough heat into the exhaust to burn it off

You could remove the innards of the cat and clean that part. And you could try running it without the front pipe attached, which would eliminate oil in the exhaust theory.

But white smoke, relatively odourless is not oil.

So be clear on what the smoke is.

Is the cooling system operating as normal ? ie no unusual pressure, no leaks, or water loss ? heater etc work as normal ?

I've ran her for a hour for 3 nights in a row buddy!

I did prime the turbo and all before installation, I have removed lamda sensor and still the smoke pours out the hole!

Turbo won't even make 1psi on rev..

I've orders another this time from a gt4 specialist breaks that comes with 27 day warranty ! If its not good he replaces it! Tbh I think that's not bad!

I was considering geting a t4 but too much mod required for it!

Yeh the cooling is working fine! I've pressure tested all the system and she holds pressure

The smoke is definetly smelling of burning oil but it is thick white so I'm thinking as its a twin entry turbo that's oil n water fed! There must be a crack in it somewhere causing the coolant to piss straight into exhaust side!

When you took the turbo off...you did remove the core from the turbine housing.

I assume when fitting the new turbo, you did not take this approach ?

Fitting a T34 or similar isnt actually that difficult....and when done it's a damn sight easier to install/remove !!!

I did that on a friends car back in 1999 or so when nothing was really available for those cars.
It actually worked great. Just made an adaptor for the turbo, new downpipe, oil lines etc...and job done. It's a tightish squeeze, but nowhere near as bad as the OEM turbo !

If there was coolant loss sufficient to cause that much smoke, then it would have been very apparent on your pressure test, and it would be very clear to see the coolant loss in the system

What do the plugs look like ?

How soon after a cold start does the smoke appear ?

Plugs should not smell of fuel. Are they clean, wet, dry, whatever ?

Video only matters if it is a fully cold start.

If there is smoke immediately, then the smoke is coming from something in the chamber. Not the exhaust or turbine, as the latter would require some heat into them before it would start burning stuff off.

The old turbo charger I removed the front off and left the old exhaust housing on car to make sure the turbo had actualy blown n it was!

The new turbo I did the same to make easier to install !

I'm sure I said that was not a good idea !!

The turbine wheels on them are very very fragile. Given the awkwardness of that task, it is very easy to clip a wheel and damage it when trying to put it back together like that.
And after that, it will not last long.

Ur very knowledgable Steve and I appreciate your info !

So I'm guessing there is the problem!

I used to old exhaust housing and put the new front cartridge into it! I did it gently without catching or banging but I guess it's nicked it some where!

Quick Reply: Thick white smoke?????
