Default Advice regarding cambelt - Just pickd up a used car (vw golf mk5)

Would you get your cambelt changed even though your service book says it was done 10k ago which 1 year ago and you also had proof from the garage which did it?
(I got them to send me a invoice, vw dealer)

Normally I get it done when I buying a used car (due to no history of it) and now I have history of it being changed and me not doing it is making me paranoid! you can't win! lol

Do you have any reason to not believe them?

I'd trust it, especially with it being a dealer.

It's your engine though and if it snaps it's going to hit you in the wallet.

Interesting point though, we sold a Nissan Quashqai Ntec at work with 20k miles on it. Week later guy says there's a problem with it, we book it in with our garage who does our warrantee work and the timing belt had become brittle and snapped, killing valves and pistons! We sell a lot of these and not had a problem since but cost us Ł1k to repair.

If it's making you think and worry then you won't rest until it's been done by you.

If you weren't worried you wouldn't be asking.

Personally I'd be happy with that, just have a peek at the belt as well.

mate of mine (ajc on here) bought a beetle for his missus, dropped it off with me cus it was running a bit poorly and had epc light on, it had history for cambelt being done by a vw main dealer only months previous, however i checked timing on it and it was two teeth out!!! you have to remember main dealers usually give jobs like that to apprentices so beware of main dealer history!

Thanks for the advice guys,

yeah normally I would get it done but it feels like I am just throwing money away.

I'll see if I can get a look at it, and maybe get it done next year sometimes as I think VW guarantee their cambelt work for 2 years anyway.

I always say if your unsure or worried about it change it, I know garages who stamp books for a tenner etc so always best to check yourself

if you have proof that it was done, book stamped and you managed to get them to check their records and they've found the invoice in their system, plus the fact its done 10,000 miles and is running fine. I'd give it a visual inspection, if theres no major signs of wear, i'd say it will be fine.

its pointless spending money on something thats already been done.

That would be a complete waste of time and money you have 5 years and 50,000 miles to go.

bottlers - if it was a cam chain and you let it go low on oil that could be the cause of your problem.

My mate had a mk6 gti and did the same. Engine in the bin.

Retarded owners are as bad as retarded dealers.

I really doubt that car could do 10k miles 2 teeth out.
