Been looking at getting a remap on my vxr and I'm being told all sorts! Biggest worrie is that it should be done on a rolling road to check afr ect? Should I be looking into this or are most cars safe at the optimized file?

I would always want my AFR checking with any remap.

As above, I'd be very worried if a tuner wasnt checking AFR when tuning a car. Plus, just so you know, it doesn't need to be done on a rolling road either... can be checked on open road too.

its not worth guessing the afr is correct, if its a generic off the shelf map then i wouldnt get it done unless the afr's are checked

what if your car has a problem which you're unaware of?

Obviously it's advisable that it is checked but I bet there are hundreds of cars remapped at your home/work place by mobile installers that aren't...

the problem is if theres an issue they don't know about that is no problem with a stock car it may become a problem once the map is tweeked/boost increased etc.

id want it checking, tbh the first thing I do on any turbo car I buy is fit an aem afr gauge for £130 its not worth the risk imo.

Might be worth asking Stu @ motorsport developments what his installers do.

On the couple of occasions I've seen VWs get remapped (loading a pre-tuned flash) by Revo and AmD all they did was road test with vag-com/vcds showing live data. When main dealers do cal updates from the manufacturers they aren't AFR checked either.

Obviously if you're building a cal from scratch that's a different kettle of fish altogether.
