It looked alright and to be fair it would have fixed up alright (oil leak, wrong engine fitted and fucked AYR, which I didn't know when I bought it!) but it was incredibly boring to drive. There was no way I would have kept it no matter what.

I can't understand the obsession with E46 M3's

I couldn't go back to a NA engine. And I've driven a few M3's, they didn't do anything for me at all

Totally agree, don't do much for me being NA though I can see the appeal for others. I went in a supercharged E46 M3 that had made over 600bhp on the dyno and that was fun though. The guy had spent a LOT of money though, as in enough to buy a GT2 Porsche.

Nothing.....! Cossies are epic when they're on it! Although I'm starting to get bored after 12 years so I've bought a 2wd as well now. If I start to hate that I will probably get rid if both tbh. Love mk2 escorts so maybe I'd go that way for a weekend car.

I've never owned a Cosworth, so can only compare with the various Imprezas/GT4/TypeR/123d which I've owned. I never used to be a big fan of E46 M3, used to see them away in my Imprezas and write them off as over priced and not very quick.

Then after a loan spell in Lambchop's ///M, I changed my opinion totally and made it my mission to own one.

It does everything so bloody well. It still looks good (to me anyway!), costs very little to run relatively, it's reliable, I like the noise it makes, it's comfy, it's well spec'd and it handles extremely well. Plus it's fairly inconspicuous, so I don't shit myself when I leave it parked in town/on street/in car park, etc.

I was actually in talks with a couple of dealerships about a deal on an E90 M3 saloon and an E92 M3 Coupe... but I went for a 250 mile run on some of the best driving roads in the UK (IMO) on Sunday with the Subaru Owners Club. Now I was following a handful of Newage STi which were running between 380-450bhp and had another 15 or so behind me. At no point, was I lacking in power or handling ability in my car compared to these cars which are arguably (along with Evos) some of the best suited cars to these tight, twisty, undulating country/mountain roads.

I'm finding it more difficult to justify the extra money to upgrade to the E9* series M3 now.. however having a test drive may change that, I'm not sure.

Cheers,
Grant

Bought my first Cossie in 1994 it was a F reg 2wd Saph with greens etc. I used this as my only transport for 2yrs & then sold it for a H plate 4x4 Saph which i hated. Then bought a black 3dr which was my favourite & kept this for 4yrs as a second car/toy. Modded it with coilovers, big brake kit, engine rebuild etc was putting out 360bhp on the rolling rd so was good fun. I had an E36 M3 as the family car & the 3dr as a second car tucked away in the garage but the 3dr got used less and less so i sold it after 4yrs of ownership ( this was about 10 yrs ago). Got the Cossie bug so 6 months later i bought a 4x4 Saph with a £10.5k Graham Goode engine & 8 injector setup,AP's etc, only had this for a few months as the realisation kicked in that i shouldn't have bought another Cossie as i was done with them. Sold this to someone on here & then bought a M3 Evo,had that for 3yrs, E39 M5 had that for 5 yrs & now have the E60 M5. Personally i don't miss Cosworth ownership at all. The 3dr is nice to look at but thats as far as it goes for me, maybe if i was minted & had space for lots of classic cars then a 3dr or 500 would be in my collection but thats not going to happen unless i win a few million !

Simon.

You sound fairly certain its the right thing to do and it does sound it tbh, business man family man etc etc. If it were me I,d get a 5 series of some description then get your moneys worth and in the future maybe get another 'toy' later on .

Had a spin in an E39 M5 today funny enough! This one was an '02 plate, absolutly stinking, the low oil light was on, engine management light was on (Vanos) and it had done 182,000miles. Was still an absolute hoot and made a cracking noise. I'm well impressed.
Just wish I could afford to run one

i sold this after 8 years,

Ex PF Feature car

Ended up being on 1000`s, 1.06AR Turbonetics T61 turbo, EXT wastegate, BD16`s, P8 GEMS gpA Antilag ECU etc etc

and yes, looking 100% standard

built a RWD mk5 escort "cosworth" with the running gear

Sold "the Cunt"

then wanted my old saff back but it wasnt for sale :'(

so i built this

But it never replaced a big hole in my heart that F666 NHJ left when i did the dirty deed
it was and always will be, MY car

So the Aprillia Oxford blue saff was SOLD

and i bought this:

Name: Photo-0124.jpg

for everyone thinking what the fuck is that..........

it was a 1992 Audi 100 S4 2.2 20v Turbo (or URS4 within the Audi circles)

Screaming 5 cylinder Turbo and about 280bhp

18" genuine BBS wheels,

Electric everything

Leather and Carbon Fiber interior

Quattro ofcourse with Electronic doff locks (wicked for donuts!!)

then again i got bored........

so i did a deal and PX`d the mint URS4 for a shitter one and robbed the running gear

and did this to my 1999 2.5 tdi Quattro Sport Avant i blew the motor up on

(I also had Various vary rare Quattro Audi 80`s and other stuff to keep me smiling in the meantime)

Then got Ford love again, F666NHJ again wasnt for sale

so i bought a Rouse Sport Prototype........ (no pics )

Then a Sapphire Ghia as a daily hack

Various more Quattros and VW`s

Now im breaking my A4 Quattro (that i converted to RWD )

and have a 1.8 Saff weekend/ Newcastle motorway hack with 27,000 miles on the clock and is the best shell ive seen in 20+ years thats in regular use!

With the money from the A4 im Building a YB, fuck it!

i will never ever get F666 NHJ back, and if im honest i now dont want him back.........

Loving Fords again with my Rouse and my Saff LX, ALL the Audi stuff is going, and again that A4 was and always will be MY car :S

My mates got a e46 BMW convertible and it's a lovely car but just not me .
I've had my 2wd saff for 14 years now and love it to bits but at times I wonder is it worth it :-(
Had a mag featured escort cossie a few years ago aswell as the saff and hated it and it bought the love back for the saff big style .
Was thinking of selling the saff and keeping the escort :-(
Luckily I didn't !

I would still love a evo 5/6 but warming to the evo 8 .
My mate had a evo 5 rs and was an amazing car .

I know I would regret getting rid of mine .

Had mine for 17 years. Its unique so i hang on to it. Prefer my SLK these days far better to drive & enjoy.
When its gone circa my 70th birthday i will replace it with my first love a 1930's car. I will never own another car with the amount of grunt my Cossie has so wont be looking for a replacement which is fast.

Just bought mine this year....child hood hero and all that.

What other car could you buy for £7k - £8k that is such an icon and gets so much respect and thumbs up.

You can keep your old M3's.
