Default Gutted.... might have just found the reason my race car didn't work in 2012!

My 2012 racing season was ruined by an on boost missfire and water loss that I just couldn't find ( I presumed the coolent was pressuring up when warm) the engine is out for an expensive rebuild to sort it....
Tonight whilst cleaning the water stains off the header tank I've only just gone and found a crack in the underside of it Argh!!!!!!!
when racing by the time I got into parc ferme and got the bonnet open the water had dried up on the hot tank leaving just stains but around the coil / map sensor was still wet..

These tanks don't last forever , I had to have my washer tank welded after a few years .

I find it amazing that the expensive alloy ones only last a few years, yet the cheapo plastic OE ones last 30 years

the alloy tanks handle pressure better than plastic, but they are brittle.
we have alloy adblue tanks that are forever being repaired.

At a guess you probably had the suspected head gasket /coolant pressurisation problem as well Steve because any garage you took it to with a coolant leak will have done the bare minimum of a cooling system pressure test to 30psi so I can only assume that header tank doesnt leak until above that pressure or they would have found it? The only way to exceed that pressure is an engine problem.

That said, the over pressure cap should have been venting long before then and you would maybe have noticed that it WASNT coming out of the cap? (Stains/antifreeze etc on top and sides?)

you could have loaded it up on a rolling road with the bonnet open and looked for the leak but hindsight is a wonderful thing to say what you could have or should have done

Hi stu, the stains/ wetness were all round the header tank but as it had dried when I came into park ferme it was presumed it was from the cap and on the rolling road no leak was seen.

Oh well, it's a positive thing you found the crack so don't look at it from the negative aspect of the engine being taken out and time wasted etc. You could've recon'd it and still had a sinister water loss issue which would've bee a right pain in the ass.

Swapping the HG is probably a good preventative maintenance measure, so again i wouldn't be too pissed off about it, but it'd be good if it was all free!
