got me a set of series 1 alloys to put on my rs 1600i replica ,have a mate who'll sand blast them for me so was going to have a bash at painting them myself. have used silver hammerite in the past with mixed results ,can anyone recommend a good paint colour to use ( spray cans of course) to give close to original colour shade, cheers folks

I used stratos silver in rattle cans in the past and then a few coats of lacquer over the top - iirc star silver for ford is a close match?
Get a decent lacquer though as have found some cheaper brands have a yellow tinge to them.
Personally I found it a bit of a ball ache (mainly the sanding which you don't have to worry about) but even spraying took a day and so easy to get bits of floating crap in the lacquer!!
By the time you have bought the paint, lacqure, tack wipes, masking tape etc you aren't far off paying someone to do it professionally.

I am guessing the tyres are off the wheels, but if not, use cling film to mask them up, tuck masking tape in between the tyre and the alloy, then wrap the cling film around the tyre and tape the edges, then a quick blast with a hair dryer and the cling film shinkwraps to the tyre. Much easier than paper and easy to shift them around without paper tearing off etc.

There are company's now that only charge £25 a rim for powder coat or paintless, bumper scuff mobile guys that will prep and paint them for about the same price but saves you removing tyres.
