Question I've bought a Megasquirt ECU - any good?

Hi all,

Thought this seemed like a good idea for my focus Zetec turbo that I'm doing. This is what I've just purchased...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MS1-V3-MEG.../251289954403?

I have a few questions that I'm hoping someone can answer which are:
Does this have a tacho output?
Can this control fuel and ignition?
Is it hard to wire up and should I only use silver solder or normal solder or crimps?
Does it work with cam sensor, crank sensor or both?
Anything else I might need to know?

Apeeciate your input... I fucking hate electrics!

It will control fuel and ignition, have you done any reading up on m/s before purchase, I was advised that really a ms2 was the best option for a turbocahrged engine.

Robdohc or karlos G will prob be able to answer your questions a bit better.

my advise is send it to robdohc for testing because if it was build at home by a spanner then it may cause you issues if not built right

i would only buy a m/s ecu from a specialist

You should have linked to it and asked before buying it! lol
Send it to Rob for a check over and MS2 upgrade before you do anything else.

Found an earlier auction that didnt sell and this was his write up...
Hi and welcome to my auction for the ms 1 v3 ecu. With this you will recieve...

1 unit
1 small loom
1 edis 4 module
1 mega tune cd
1 usb convertor with cd an extension cable
1 zip tie

All pictured above is what you will recieve. Right this was purchased off ebay for my zetec turbo conversion. It was listed for zetec turbos and when i recieved it and got it tested it wasnt. I paid to have it modified and converted to run with edis at bailey performance in telford. I also had a base map for a zetec turbo put on which would get the car running but would need tuning at a later date for correct fueling and so on.This means you will need to get it remapped! Due to loosing my job the project was put on hold and now my passion has sadly faded so i have decided to strip and sell the parts. The car ran with the ecu but never driven! This is pretty much new in mint condition. It owes me nearly 500 pounds after having it modified an purchasing the usb convertor and edis module. The only bad thing is the clip is broken on the edis module but iv provided a zip tie which is what i used. I have a few other parts that i will list over the next few weeks so keep a look out if your building a zt. Thanks for looking and any questions that i can help with i will be happy to answer. I have been as honest about this item as i can. There should be more information on megasquirtuk.co.uk about the ecu. I dont have any build sheets im not sure if it has any of the latest mods i have taken pictures of the pcb so you can see whats on it. The loom has no labels wiring diagrams are available of extra-efi.

Thank you and happy bidding!!!

any more light?

i saw it for sale but for the sake of a hours a labour take it to rob and get it checked

last thing you want is to fit it and then it melt your new engine, and the best bit is you can have all the upgrades done at the same time and get a loom and a wiring diagram and base map to suit your car

the only real difference is a small daughterboard between MS1 and MS2, the daughterboard is quite cheap (about $111.00).

If the ecu is exactly what you want in terms of spec (EDIS etcc) then you should keep it and get it upgraded to MS2 by someone who knows what there doing - it wont cost you that much more and to convert a stock MS2 to have EDIS and other mods etc will cost a fair chunk in labour

I thought MS2 worked with EDIS out the box? Well there's a guy selling MS2s for 440 on extraEFI and it looks like a good deal.

But yeah I'd consider upgrading instead, could RobDOHC be any help?

how much did you spend on it?
i know it's intrusive, but would determine if sellin giton would be better.
personally i don't get why you would want to run edis, certainly not on a zetec turbo engine.
direct coil drivers fitted will be far better, i guess someone didn't really think about this at the place it got sent to for fixing....
buy a new one and sell this on, it really could get expensive if it needs work, better to get one that's right from the off without adding parts on till you're happy with it.
it took me ages to sell mine for £400 and that was loaded with far more than the one you have bought and was off a running car.
i wish you the best, but please tell me you haven't spent more than £250 on it.

I bought it for 250. Hoping I can sell it on for the same price though. Rob_dohc said he would do the MS2 upgrade for free I would just have to pay for the parts. Only thing that worries me is the fact this noob who sold it to me converted it to run edis if it can control my could on it's own. Bafffling?!

What route did you go?

digging up this thread again.. This unit i bought is a megasquirt 1 v3 with the EXTRA code loaded onto it.
so.. is this now any better for the turbo conversion.

In 2 mind of selling it on and buying an MS2 (double the price though) or just using this one????

Thanks

get it sent off to rob, or james murray (efi forum), get the ms2 daughter board fitted and checked out.
do change the coil drivers so there is no need for edis though.

I would buy a unit with warranty to be honest unless your willing to send it off for modding/ checking

I just brought a gotech mfi pro ecu with custom braided loom that has the narrow band lamba, launch control wiring already done and set up all for £260 delivered

Bargain if you ask me and no worries of a numpty putting it together

+1 but don't bother with a narrow band.

As far as I know it can be programmed for that too, so when it's being mapped they can sort stuff like that

Good choice, then get a fresh one from Rob at Boost Monkeys.
Also as mentioned you don't need or want EDIS, Rob's ECU's will run the coil pack directly.

If you make this adjustment do you need to switch to MS Extra? As that has been told to me

I run the same config that is able to control two coils of the std Ford module

We gave up with Gotech after buying the Ecu from the well known tuner and finding help and support vanished when we wouldn't replace our items with their expensive ones. Apparently their parts was the only way to get the results we wanted. Sorely disappointed with a tuner that seemingly has a good reputation.
