Default 2003 BMW mini issues... Anyone help?

Got alittle issue with the mother in law's 2003 Mini Cooper...

It's starting/ running fine from cold.
Once warmed up its randomly dropping its revs.
Also starting it when warm is taking a couple of attempts... Followed by di!ky idle for a few seconds.
I've chucked some plugs in and put a new air filter in it as she's said it was feeling sluggish...
This hasn't really helped...
It's not throwing any errors up, anyone got much experience with these and point me in the right direction...?

I'm tempted to try a coil pack on it, maybe a throttle position sensor on it???
But don't really wanna guess as its not my money...

Have you scanned it with a generic code reader or the proper dealer software. My brother has the latter and about the only thing it can't do is wake you up with a coffee. His generic reader missed a lot.

They can really suffer from coke up problems. It can be expensive to diagnose with cameras down the bores or head off but worth trying a terraclean atŁ120 just go on the terraclean site and they can text you the local agent. I had my 1 series done as a precaution.

what is the point of manufacturers spending millions on putting diagnosis routines in the software for people to completely ignore it and just throw parts at things? totally stupid.

even if there is no code up on a light, there may be fault codes stored. even if there isn't a decent OBD kit will enable you to find fault by plotting traces of throttle position, revs, ignition angle etc etc so you can pinpoint the problem. take it somewhere that can do that. how you expect anyone on t'internet to solve it for you i don't know.

if its a lumpy tickover it could be an exhaust valve burnt out, normally number 4 cylinder.
we have had a few in work that run ok until warm then drop off a cylinder and they have all had a burnt out valve.
have you done a compression test on it?

My focus was running like a dog, no EML on the dash but plugged it in and 3 codes were stored. It's quite likely there will be something there!

Totally agree and here was no need for you to receive such an aggressive response. Often forums point you in the right direction straight away.

I had a merc problem and the dealer wanted Ł1000 to take the dash out and fix the problem....merc forum told me a common fault and the DIY fix was under Ł100. Needless to say dash did not need to be removed.

Ask away......

Seen this too, not uncommon on these unfortunately.

fine. this is a ford forum, not a bmw / mini one where there's more likely to be an answer.

it wasn't meant in an aggressive way, but the OP has not even bothered to do the most basic of diagnostic checks to at least give some clues so why should anyone bother to try and help?

No mate, really the car has never caused us any issues...
Sounds like new, drives like new...
I'll bear it all in mind though...
Plenty to look at, gotta run it down a mate's garage Tuesday to scan it...
Gonna give it a good check over and go from there...
Cheers for all the heads ups though...
Probably needs a good thrashing, it's only used round town... It's a pampered thing she treated herself to when she retired...

so after all the 'help' on here so far, are you any better off? no. you've still got to do what i said in the first place and get it checked on a proper diagnostics setup before you do anything else

it's nice to always be right
