Very young family - Mondeo ST TDCI Estate or BMW 330D MSport Touring

Slightly older young family - BMW 530D Touring

Dont see the sense in saloons or hatchbacks if you have a young family

If the op will use dealers that's something to think about.

I didn't buy from them, just services and the odd part, but they've gone above and beyond what you'd get elsewhere IMO

Im driving a Mk3 Mondeo Titanium X. The 2.2ltr TDCI engine is nice and smooth. The car is pretty quick and returns 50mpg on the motorway. The spec is pretty awesome with heated and cooled half leather seats, cruise control, Sony stereo, Bluetooth phone, parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, gorgeous 18" alloys ect ect ect. Just as good as the ST but without the bodykit, seats and stiffer suspension (thats it i think)

Want something cheap to run and buy, powerful, and economical in every way? one choice; MK4 Mondeo 140 TDCi. Remap it, and get about 175, with even better fuel economy.

Depending on budget (Mondeos come in near the bottom of most peoples budget), a TOP spec 2012 Titanium X with about 10k miles will cost you very little, around 16 grand to be precise. That is A LOT of car, for one seriously small amount of cash.

Just a rapid look online right now, but here's the sort of insane deals that can be had Mondeo stylee. This is even the 163HP version, remap this one to over 200HP easy:

Then you would love a Titanium X Sport. Bodykit looks awesome, and Mondeos are SO cheap!

One thing about the OP's original question, is that the makes he mentioned are all in very different market brackets and price ranges. Ford really cannot be compaired to a BMW or even an Audi, both these manufacturers are leagues above Ford for quality. Ford is cheap and very cheerful. BMW's are (generally) double the price and refined WAY beyond any Ford.

A budget bracket would yield more clues to choice.....

EDIT: For example, is BMW really an option within budget?! If so, get a Alpina D5. Although... these D5's are slightly different to normal 530D....!!

Indeed, the ubiquitous Mondeo is indeed all things to all men, the newer the better, exceptional value.

In your position would be my choice.

@Lord Melbury: Well put. And simply fantastic user name/signature. What a series.

@Harris: Can't beat a BM. I am definitely up for a Alpina D5 next year. I shall replace my MK4 Mondy with another MK4 Mondy before then though!

535d with the M Sport pack. Gorgeous motor!

But the Titanium X Sport S-Max is a good looking motor as well with 7 seats.
