Default who uses wireless broadband routers?

ok, im in the market for one, an all in 1 jobbie... ADSL in and 802.11g and ethernet out.

at the moment i'm tempted to buy a belkin.

my GF's dad uses a netgear, and it's shit and unreliable.

ive also heard bad things about linksys and dlink ones.

im not after anything too special, not going cisco or anything like that but do want something that WORKS :P

will have desktop PC connected via RJ45 and laptop connected via wireless. i also want the PC to be able to talk to the laptop, so the thing needs to act as a bridged switch aswell (i think most do)

For wireless I have used 2 with ADSL, a Netgear 802.11g and a Draytek (sp?) 802.11b. Used the Draytek first then upgraded to the Netgear for the speed increase.

Netgear was shit and now in the cupboard somewhere and the Draytek is back on - works faultlessly. Netgear one crashed all the time and neevr managed to get it running properly really. I'm quite clever with this stuff and despite spending a few days fiddling I couldn't figure out what was making it freeze/drop connections etc.

he'll be getting the max... ie 2mb

802.11g (what most use) is 54mb so the bottlenck is still in the internet connection.

to be honest it's not all down to the netgear wireless for it falling off... the default frequence that the netgear ships with can sadly conflict with cordless phones/micro waves so you will get signal drop outs for no reason... easy to fix...

Jim, don't forget that the 54mb connection of the wireless network is if your sat on top of it the further away you go the slower the connection will be, but your internet connection will nearlly always be the slow point

Never thought about frequency interference, but the router is next to the cordless phone base station!

Surely all 802.11x products run on the same frequency though? Otherwise my Belkin adaptors in the PCs wouldn't see the Netgear router!

yep... get this I did and install once in a school during half term and all rooms had perfect signal strength so install complete all done... kids came back in and one room kept loosing all signal so I got called back and did some tests... when someone in the room turned on a side light it would kill the signal dead, apparently the school had a sparky in doing some electrical work and he hadn't shielded the wiring so it was coursing bad problems, you could turn the lights off and all was well lol

all cordless phones operate on the same frequency range as G wireless... there will be a new standard out soon for wireless so that only wireless devices work on there own range! should help!

I use linksys router (not ADSL) with a belkin pcmcia - seems fine after I realised my laptop is screwed

Just make sure you reset everything , modem, router, pc, to make it all work

I've got a seperate 3com router and 2 3com access points,
only installed it last week, so some problems still, (mainly due to me forcing it onto a channel ) If you let them choose the channel they'll take the one with least interference.

WDS function is cool, I got a wired office connected wirelessly to my living room.
so the 2 acces points are acting as acces point AND wireless bridges AND wireless repeaters.

It does 802.11 a / b / g.
they do look cool too, and all units are stackable

I am on ntl so my router dont have the modem built in. I run a netgear 614 54g router with 2 pc`s in my study running off it on rj45 and also a laptop connecting at various times wireless. It has a pcmcia us robotics 22mbs card in it.

I get the odd drop out now and again on the laptop but it is 5 walled rooms away. I upgraded the firmware on the router and as ranj said assigned each machine an ip and dont have much bother really.

Also just noticed somebody said about cordless phones, one sits less than 3 feet away from the router.

i use a dlink dsl 604+ airlink..

its an 802.11b so its a slow one but seeing as how i only have 750k adsl, it matters not... and by the time 10mb + adsl comes out here in my city, i doubt i'll be living in this country LOL

It works fine - have very few problems with it.

Had both belkin and netgear access points (no DSL), they died shortly after purchase (in a matter of weeks).

Have a linksys all in one now (wireless + ADSL), it has survived so far and seems to have better range than any other I've had

I Have the Dlink Wireless and cant fault it wireless round the house and all four of the ethernets ports hardwired to sockets round the house and supplying 2 desktops everything can see everything else and the PS2 is pluged in as well.

No problems with everything at once and the wireless has never needed resetting once
