to be fair most things diesel these days are surprisingly quick these days.
i didn't buy into it till i bought a bora tdi and remapped it, all along i had aa leaking intercooler so never felt that fast, sorted that and it pulled on my mates a4 2.0t over 120mph and going strong.
must admit i did think the 2.2cdti vauxhall vectras shifted, puff of smoke and off they go, quick standard cars indeed.

They were brand new back then so i wasnt expcting anything like that lol especially as my pug was bloody quick i could sit with much more powerful cars

My mate has a BMW 135i, just looks like a 120d to the untrained eye, has a JB4 remap and was running 420bhp (rolling roaded), since then he's added decat downpipes, hard boost pipes and a bigger FMIC, with meth injection added it will run 500bhp @ the wheels (proven).
It's seriously fast and surprises, well, everything!

Not as intresting as some of the stories on here , but mirrored what someone else said earlier - when I first got my old ST170 I too used to think it was the quickest thing on the road , [I came to it from a 1300 ohv fiesta] , came up against a golf GTTDi 170 , (red i? ) , who motored past me on a dual carrigeway .... try as I might [and I did ] , I just couldnt catch him !

Drove my aunties one she bought months later and was suprised how well it went !

Some cracking stories on this thread though !

my old s2 106 rallye with a tweeked vts lump use to surprise a lot of people nippy little thing. It use to take abuse all day long.

i dont think my cosies really a quick car these days there always something or other that holds it back, engines cold, low fuel/oil, missfire, boost leak etc

a modern turbo diesel mondeo would win most of the time as none of the above issues, would you even think about just rag it. the cossie has to be maintained way to much to have a race and expect to win lol obviously when you keep on top of everything they are really quick but i can never be arsed i drive it normally most of the time.

on the a12 last night in my s2 got blitz by a early 90s cavalier!! cruzin @50 in middle lane. when cav pulls along side beeping looked over fella smiling and thumbs up ! then shouts just sold my rs to buy this i look again @ the cav of course i mistifired but up ahead the road clear so i dropped a cog !! and booted it a couple of seconds later he screems past me heading for the horizon catch a glimps of the decal on the boot and the first though in my head is didnt know they excisted 4x4 turbo several miles later caught up (he was a gent he slowed down ) pulled level and i shouted over i can see why u bought it ! he turned off shortly after that !! when i got home looked it up they only built them for 2 years and of a 1004 sold in uk about 400 left either on road or sorned! still he convinced me that maybe i should get it set up (changed a lot of the air and fuel components over winter) and up the boost from 7psi which i set till its set up to a more respectable 15psi

More times than I care to remember. Seen a Scooby humiliate a 360 off the lights. And was personally handed my ass by a Clio 172 when they first came out, when I had my series 2.

Surely that depends on Power. A standard uk Spec Scoob (215bhp) is not going to challenge a 360 Ferrari if both were trying. Andys Scoob has over 900bhp so that would indeed humiiate the said Ferrari but really fast cars dont do races on the road. Need to have the Power of both cars to discuss who did what. Beaten by a 172 were you walking or on your bike .

I remember my first car was a Austin metro city all my mates had novas and fiestas but I couldnt afford the insurance being a non driver at time and having to work and pay for my own car it had a engine fault which the garage at the time said at the time could be fixed as they had another car come in with failed mot due to rotting out this was back in 1997/ 1998 when it came back the engine had gone from a 1.0 to a 1.3 mg metro lump with a 4 speed box I passed my test in 13th feb 1998 by then most of mates had crashed there cars and had xr3i s well I remember one night we all went to coast on way there I proved that a 4 speed metro 4 up could still keep with a xr3i at 120 mph I don't know how quick it was but that was off clock shortly after my mates sold their cars for metros my lasted two years before floor dropped out do to tin worm I then brought a ford fiesta xr2

I've never rated them to be honest as when they came out I bought a new 1.8 zetec focus and put k&n 57i kit on it and had it remapped I used to stick to the rear end of st170's they couldn't pull on me and even flat out there was nothing in it. That focus eventually had cams, s/s 3"straight through exhaust a bit of porting and polishing then eventually frs'd it

I was once surprised (and impressed) by an old Granny in a Vauxhall Agila. The old dear was chucking it round like nobodies business! How she didn't roll it, I'll never know!

If I can drive with as much gusto when I'm that age, I'll be a very happy chap!

My MK1 Focus was a 1.8 and I did cams, UDPs, Kent Verniers MSD remap bla bla bla and pulled a 16.1 at Santa Pod. Modified ST170s get around there some do late 15s but don't think that's bad at all for a 1.8.

I once got surprised by Audi A6, seemed like 3.0 V6 TDi. My fault for starting with 3th gear @ 40 km/h. He had so much torq he pulled immediatly away but when I got the turbo spooling I started to catch him and as I was on his tail about to pass him we had to slow down. With right gear (2nd) I think I would've been ahead of him from the start. This pretty much the only time I've ever raced another car.

I also remember seeing a purple Beetle leaving from traffic lights. It went like a missile. No idea what engine it had.

I also recall driving with my friend and seeing old Plymouth with wide tires and supercharger on top of the hood... We just pulled up next to him on the traffic lights and just when the lights turned green he launched from the lights smoking the rear tires! Made easily 100 metres of black stripe on the tarmac and I later heard that he was running about 800 horsepower.

I was driving a black lotus sunbeam to some motocross event down portsmouth way,on a dual carriageway the left lane was congested but the outside was fairly clear except for an old rover two cars up and sandwiched between me and him was a toyota?had chrome vents on the bonnet, anyway the toyota was bumper to bumper flashing his lights yet the guy infront had nowhere to go and was doing nearly 70 to get out the way, anyway after a few hundred yards the inside lane began to clear and the rover pulled over,he was an elderly guy who was visibly shaken, the toyota sped past beeping with wanker sign and began to pull away,he could have pulled over but decided to stay in the outside lane, looked in the mirror and he laughed at me and went for it,cunt you have a taste of it so i just sat there flashing my hellas to see how he liked it,he didn't move, just sat there...no one was getting past him that is until there was a large bang accompanied by black smoke and sparks,he soon pulled over then as i returned his earlier gesture...i always wondered what the old guy thought when he went past that rude boy.... : )

My Corsa Z20let running 300bhp used to eat m3's focus rs's for breakfast!

One day I had a smug git in his Porsche 997 laughing at my car due to it being a little bright on the wheels, we were sat at a set of lights I saw he was laughing and revved my engine he shot off I over took him like it was nothing! At the next set of lights he asked me what was in it I said a 1.2 his face haha

There is nothing like showing up expensive "performance" cars...

But for me i had a go at a stripped out civic ep3 type-r in my Orion last year, followed him through the town centre by me, then out to a dual carriageway, exiting the roundabout i came along side him n he grinned then sodded off. Pulled over to chat to him after, jackson racing supercharger kit rr'd at 300+bhp!

The gutting thing is, went for a re-match against him recently (now im running more boost ) and when we got to the dual carriageway there was a traffic police car holding us up... I very rarely see the guy and they ruined it lol!
