Yep, as the helical ones try to push themselves apart = increased loadings. Helical is also much quieter, hence production use.

ADBR500 your spelling is terrible You will gain strength from a straight cut box. Your best bet it to speak to bernie at cts (gearbox man)

no you loose strength most of the time... Helical gears have 2 or more teeth in mesh at any one time where as st8 cut only has 1 tooth at a time... however don't confuse a quafe st8 cut kit as being weak, it won't be - the material the gears are made out of and the hardness of the gears will be MUCH better than std.

The advantage is helical gears create a side thrust as the turn... where as st8 cut do not.

GARETH T, why not to have straight cut gearbox on a road car
Take a look at the ratio's of a standard box against a straight cut one and you'll soon see 70mph at 4500 revs or something. Ideal for a track car though

You'll be lucky Benn.

The noise is fun in a novelty way, but you wait till you're driving for time - more whining than the missus

The noise is not fun after the first 5 miles or so believe me Benn.

Its not just a whine its a high pitched screech mine puts out. I can not even hold a conversation with the person sat next to me unless its through the intercom.

quaife always under quote and wrongly quote there gearbox and diff ratings, for a start its not the horse power that will kill the box , its torque and revs , so the hp rating is just a number , mu dogbox has a rating of about 160hp iirc, and i run a little more than that with near 400ft/lb through a box that is over 25 years old

I actually fell asleep in Martin Hadland's Escort on the way to Germany - with stripped interior, and straight cut box, it makes a hell of a noise!

I fell asleep cos I was absolutely fooked, but I woke up with some fookin headache!

My normal Box sounds straight cut LOL....

Straight cut doesn't always mean its strong either....more down to the quality of materials and engineering involved.

"and Fletchs cossie sounds awsome"

Cheers Benn, come down Sutton BP one Wednesday night and I will take ya for a spin mate, so you can hear the straight cut from inside the car I did 3000miles in mine before I blew the first box up and everytime I drive it the straight cut dont bother me in the slightest... Normally turn the stereo up and listen to that
