Licences held from 1 January 1997
If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can drive either:
a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500 kilograms (kg) Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM (with a combined weight of up to 4,250kg in total)
a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as it is no more than the unladen or ‘kerb’ weight of the towing vehicle (with a combined weight of up to 3,500kg in total)

Sorry m8 but you can't tow a car on a trailer the 750 is the max for the trailer no matter the size/ weight of the towing vehicle. You would be better with a transit beaver tail or sitting your test for a trailer.

The loaded trailer can't weigh more than 750 kg doesn't matter what ur towing it with. The lightest track car will be abt 1000 kg so that puts u over the limit straight awayand you still have the weight of trailer to add.

According to that link above you can tow heavier than a 750kg trailer,
a trailer OVER 750kg MAM as long as it is no more than the unladen or ‘kerb’ weight of the towing vehicle (with a combined weight of up to 3,500kg in total)
But the total weight of the trailer plus its load must weight less than the unladen weight of the tow vehicle, and the combined weight of less than 3500kgs.
So if the van is 2000kg, and the trailer with car is 1400kg, then it should be ok.
Thats how I read it anyway.

Facts: if you passed your car test before the cut off date in 1996 then you can tow a trailer. If not then you basically can't. Ok there exceptions, like you can tow one of those small compressor road works trailers for example. Just as long as it weighs less than 750kg AND unbraked. Or one of those mini trailers that your retired next door neighbour uses to take stuff to the local refuse tip.
You need to sit a B+E driving test. Which is just as well since 90% of drivers clearly don't have a clue what is capable of the vehicle they drive, legally, not to mention vehicle train weights.
