Default 2002 Focus Fan issues

My mate has just bought a 2002 Ford Focus 2.0 zetec.

I was having a nosey over it today and noticed the fan switch was mounted on
the battery housing, The wiring has been cut and wired directly to the battery with a
fuse wired into it.

The fans don't seem to work either.

I have searched for where the sensor would have been but there isn't a
hole in the rad or the thermostat housing.

Where should it be and is there a common problem with these fans?

after a bit of re-search it seems this is the way they left the factory with the sensor
fitted to the side of the battery box.

Still need to get the fans working though.

Can anyone tell me how the fans SHOULD work?

i.e Low speed/High speed, When they should work on either speed?

Had exactly the same situation with mine.I thought it was some bodge but found out it was factory. The temp switch is located on the back of the head on the left hand side, just above the alternator .A right bitch to get to.I put a new switch in and unplugged the shitty bit of loom and plugged it in the fans. Now works fine. The shitty bodge should only affect the coolant fans, air con fans should come straight on when a/c switch is turned on.

A/C fan doesn't operate when A/C is on.
The fans work if I bridge the temp sensor plug on the side of battery but I haven't seen them work any other time.

The temp switch you mention is just for the gauge isn't it?
If so that's working fine.

Is ther any air con gas in the system.

Normaly with the focus,if the heater contols are on hot and the heater is onto the windscreen the rad fans should come on.

the wifes focus never did this till the air con system was regassed.
