Default Dead Turbo - Alhambra

51 plate Alhambra 1.9tdi 115, Loss of power, lot of blue/grey smoke (especially under load or revving), and slight noise under the bonnet. Had the RAC out to tow the car home, roadside diagnosis being turbo f*cked, how is best to confirm this? Just before pulling over, the car struggled to pull over 40 in 3rd, smoke when revved stinks of oil.

you can get the turbo's out from the top if you take the engine mount off and pull the engine forward

ouch

if you can get your hand to the compressor, feel for play in the compresor wheel, if you've got that much smoke i suspect there will be lots of in & out movement & latteral movement

Good job it wont be me doing the work! I've got a friend of a friend, semi retired mechanic, willing to do it for £125 - £150, I've just got to buy the bits. I had considered a rebuild kit, but having never attempted rebuilding one myself, and the mechanic not too keen on doing a rebuild, coupled to the fact that I need the car back on the road asap, looks like it'll be used or recon part.

I went out to move it up on to the garden earlier, and it was like it suddenly got very foggy lol, couldnt see for smoke.

Apart from the obvious turbo, are there any other bits I'm likely to need, ie bits likely to snap come removal?
