I love em. My dads mate has a 900hp carbon fibre ex prodrive hillclimb monster. Amazing. Love the sound, love the look, remind me of rallying and their heritage. Brilliant car IMO

Never owned a classic impreza but have a blob eye twin scroll. They are superb cars for the money and if bought with care very reliable. I love my cossie but also love my sub, both for different reasons. Biggest thing in favour of subs is how cheap they are, cosworths are great but no longer a budget performance car.

I had a 2000MY in Mica Blue. Great cars. Kept standard or tuned properly with good servicing, they are reliable cars. I put a Standard Ecu from a 1998 car (ecu code AE801) which have better boost maps than the later AE802's and it used to fly. If i were gonna buy another one, I would look for a nice standard 1998-1999 UK model that hasn't been messed with.

Plenty of good ones out there for sub 2k, even sub 1.5k. Same as buying any car its all about weedling the crap ones out!

Parts can be relatively expensive but no more so than most 'performance' cars.

Was doing 420bhp with matching torque.
Built it to do 500bhp, slipping clutch didn't help. Was only running 22psi. Remember mapping it on a private road with speedo showing 165 and it would have still kept pulling right round to rev limiter!!!
Brutal road car!!!

I love a classic impreza, probably the performance bargain out there right now. Shame they are a bastard to insure (can't insure onw for less than £7000), which sucks, you can get an early wrx for £2k, been looking at cars for around that, fuck all intrests me, a scooby so would!

So how bad are imprezas to live with on a daily basis?
i do 10 miles each way to work, so 100 miles a week and occasionally use my car at the weekends but not that often.
i have about £1500 plus whatever i can get for my 51 plate 65k mile puma, and i quite fancy an impreza.
ideally i need 4 doors for the odd occasion i take the kids in my car and reasonable size boot, but then anything will have a better sized boot than the puma.
road tax on the puma is about £220 a year and it does on average 30-33mpg so id want something near that, and yes if you drive an impreza flat out everywhere it wont do that, but i dont drive flat out all the time lol

and im afraid the octavias do nothing for me!

Be under no illusion, these are thirsty beasts. If you're lucky you'll return around 20mpg (if you behave yourself)! If you don't like filling up don't buy one! I seemed to be at my local Shell garage every other day!!

What about other stuff then? Like parts, service intervals etc. (don't really know why I'm asking, deffo out of my budget, just interested I guess)

As I said in an earlier post, parts/service parts can be relatively expensive but no more so than most 'performance' cars.

Service intervals are every 7500 miles (or 6 months), major service every 30000 miles cambelt every 45000 miles (or 4 years).

Few mates have had them and I love them from the rally days. Sound immense!

Best one I seem was roger Clarkes, fuck me that thing was rapid! And ear
Piercing turbo noise. Think that was circa 900 bhp.

I run a 2005 model import on a daily basis and average 20mpg overall, but a lot of my runs are urban to and from work so would get mid 20's on a run. Parts are cheap really and general service stuff available from euro car parts. As for other spares an abundance is available used at good prices, they are easy to tune but must be done properly. But they are so reliable I can't comment on other parts prices. I have run an impreza for over 6 years daily and have never had to do more than routine servicing can't say that about fords I have ran daily.

Well commute is roughly 9 miles of b roads and 1 mile duel carriageway, or 10 miles b roads if i take a different route.

I like the idea of one but 20 mpg might sting a bit!!

Ill be back on the bike a few days a week when the weather is a bit better so if i did get one it might make use the bike more lol

I had a turbo 2000 wagon, bought it for £900, FSH and had 150k on it used it for a year and never missed a beat until the day after it went up for sell! The maf sensor packed up.
It was only for the fact of high insurance that I got rid, as it was a second car. I would defiantly own one again. It was thirsty, but never got bored of driving it.

Heres my 99 uk turbo 2000;

Had it 3 years now and I love it.
Its totally standard engine wise and is my daily driver. Its so reliable and easy to live with, it's been up the Horseshoe Pass (north Wales) in snow, got us out of a mud bath at Creamfields, can chuck the dogs in the back, it helped me move house etc lol
Only things I've had to have done is a new lambda sensor and a fuel filler neck.
It has a service and plugs every year and that's it.
Tax is £220 odd. Insurance group 17. Roughly 24-25mpg (last time I checked).
I spent £200 on some decent brake discs and pads and got a mate to fit them, and put 4 Bridgestones on it.

Not easy to find them un-abused these days but itd be worth spending £2k and searching for a decent one. Paid £2650 for mine from a local dealer (3yrs ago obviously)

Eta: maf sensors are a common problem on the 99's, although *touch wood* mines been ok.

(I shouldn't be saying all this, I've got to book it in for an MOT tomorrow!!)

Had an sa wagon for about 5 years all in all and did pretty much nothing to it,flew mot every year apart from needing a cat one year as I was selling it.
They don't rot either in all honesty like the evo's do.
Really quick and handle well, don't be concerned too much about how much it costs, had constant nobends on the Impreza website telling me I needed to spend £4k for a goody.
Paid £2k for mine in 2005 which had a new turbo, spare wheels, strut braces, magnex zorst, cat 1 alarm, box of history and as above I spent nothing on it.
One thing I will say though is it was standard import spec so about 240/250 horse but being sa had aluminium bonnet and doors so perhaps a touch faster??
Was doing an average 25 odd mpg but on a run easily 30/35,lovely power on the motorway as well, really smooth too.
Honestly superb overall package, can't fault them for about £12/1500.
Don't rule out the wagons either, much lower chav value than the saloons and really practical, often seem to be better cared for as well.

I do still like a good classic impreza but preferably a 3 door or anything other than a UK turbo which was shit

Back when imprezas were relatively new there was all the subaru v cossie nonsense. They would bang on about rusty fords blah blah. 20 years on IMO the cossies ages a hell of a lot better than the impreza. They are so cheap now that every chav and their dog has a shitty old M plate WRX.

Buy the right one though and they look fantastic

We had a little surprise in the form of a third child lol. All three child seats wouldn't fit in no matter how hard we slammed the doors. And there was only a lap belt for the middle seat

Good cars and parts aren't that expensive if you know where to look. Plus there's a strong 2nd hand market for them.

I've got a late Blob now so probably wouldn't get a Classic again but if I did, it'd be another Type R like my last one.
