Default Standard 1.8 Zetec mods ?

I've got a 1998 1.8 Zetec focus but I want some tips on how to get a bit more power without spending stupid money. I think it's a carburetor model and I'm wondering can you re map these models ? Any tips would be help full. Cheers

As per any engine for simple mods you want the engine to be able to breathe easier so an airfilter/induction kit as well as an exhaust system/back box to free up those gases and then if nothing else a good service with some new spark plugs and leads always help

Don't bother tuning it at all. Drop a 2 litre in for the most cost effective bang per pound. Instant 130bhp.

It won't be with a carb it will be standard EFI with a single throttle body. I think only some American spec Focuses came with carbs which in any case were not Zetec dervied.

Regardless, my very first proper car was a 2003 1.8 Zetec Focus. I did quite a bit of work on engine mods and got to know the engine well. The best set of mods imo are:

-Evolution Chips map
-ST170 4-2-1 manifold
-Cat-back exhaust and decat
-Induction: either stick with the standard induction and add the ST170 snorkel with 2.0 air deflector or go for an AEM style long arm induction. Short ram induction kits like a K&N Gen II don't work too well on the Zetec's layout in the Focus as the filter is too exposed to consistent warm air so either a long arm kit with the filter near the front or stick with the standard setup.

My car had all the above with addition of stage 2 Comp Cams from the US, CFM under drive pulleys and Kent Verniers running 4deg ADV in and 2deg RET exh. On reflection, it wasn't worth the money spent in putting the cams in imo the best format it was in was with the exhaust system, induction and remap. Pokey enough to have some fun, sounded great and was a good compromise from an otherwise excellent engine. Reliable and bombproof my Zetec was, treated her well and it treated me well.

So that's my 2p worth: ST170 4-2-1 (Milltek 4-2-1 or Piper 4-2-1 are equally as good), Decat or ST170 cat, full cat-back, Evolution Chips map and either a standard induction with the above suggestion or a long arm induction kit.

Some pics for a bit of inspiration:

Miss my MK1!
