Default BMW 5 series diesels,any horror story's?

I'm looking to replace my daily mondeo in the near future and need something diesel and big.
Had a look around and I quite like the 5 series tourings, around 06 plate onwards, wife has a 12 plate 5 series and I reckon it's a lot uglier than the older shape which I like so not wanting that model as it looks like it's been punched in the face!
I'd like either the 3.0 or the 3.5 diesel m sport version, spoke to a friend who does all my diagnostic work and is very knowledgeable,he said when the BMW diesels go wrong it's very expensive to fix,he mentioned a 335 he knew of needing a replacement engine,1st qoute from a main dealer was 12k but the owner negotiated that down to 6k.
Wouldn't like to spend around 16k on a car then face a bill like that at any point.
Any advice, tips or previous bad experience I'd like to hear it!
Thanks in advance,Lee

Don't know of the engines quitting, but the 535 m sports suffer with the fuel pumps failing. They have a pump which transfers diesel from the fuel tank to a "reservoir" in the system which then gets pumped to the engine by a second pump! The first one can fail commonly,
Our police force uses about 5 of these and they are Keats in my buddy's garage being replaced

Apart from that, they're bulletproof
