Part 4: Uninsured vehicles

Rules in England, Wales and Scotland

The rules for insuring vehicles are called ‘continuous insurance enforcement’. They mean that if you’re the registered keeper of a vehicle it must be insured or declared as off the road (SORN).

If not, you could:
get a fixed penalty of £100
have your vehicle wheel-clamped, impounded or destroyed
face a court prosecution, with a possible maximum fine of £1,000

It doesn’t matter who is driving the car - if you’re the registered keeper, you could get penalised.

You will also still have to pay for your insurance on top of any fines received.

You can check if your vehicle is insured on askMID.

taken from https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-insurance/uninsured-vehicles

Has to be sorn'd im afraid.

and the best bit? You're not allowed to tax it again for 3 weeks after its been sorn'd if you get a road tax refund!!

personally i wouldnt bother, you plan to use it in a couple of weeks and its not parked on a public road. and i take it you have just bought it? technicially wont be in your name for a couple of weeks either. dvla send you a warning letter first, they dont just issue fines.

Not how i've experienced it. I forgot to Sorn a car once - no warning letters, just a straight up £80 fine as long as I paid it within 14 days.

I left my car off the road for 4 weeks with tax but no insurance as it was for sale and didn't want to SORN it. They will take a while before they realize and by then you will have taxed it. Not worth the bother of making a SORN only to tax it just because DVLA say so.
