Just bought one and I'm really disappointed with it I know nothing about them and just walked past PC world and bought one without finding out as well Women in there said to get the Epson Rx425 and that the photos are as good as you would get from Boots.... I now realise this was probably a load of sales talk

have I had a shocker?? what should I have bought?? I think its gonna have to go back coz its poo!

anyone got anything that does really nice prints?

That printer should do very nice prints. Im using the r300, which is the same printer without the scanner. Take it you are using the correct paper etc

yea, you should get that. Ive framed a few, they look incredible. What paper are you using? Make sure that you select photo paper in the print settings, and you select photo quality.

For the very best pictures you need to use HIGH quality PHOTO paper, quite expensive but this is the only way to get great results

I have the R300 - brilliant for photo's. Just make sure you are using photo glossy paper, and in the properties settings set it to output at the highest quality using photo enhance.

It's brilliant, so much better than my old Epson.

You need to also select "Premium Glossy Photo Paper" (and have some as well ).

I have the photo of Martin's car (the one lifting an inside front wheel) on my office wall and it is like a proper photo and mine is the old Photo R200 .

There may be a couple of different places to change settings in though - you have to make sure you tell it "best quality print" and that it will be using glossy photo paper.

Lee it should work fine, make sure the image you are printing is high quality and check all the settings!

If you rung the makers of the printer, i.e. Canon, they would say "we cannot guarantee the quality of the print unless you are using Canon Photo Paper and Canon Photo Cartridges" In other words, if you use paper or Cartridges not made by Canon they wont help you... I used to work for Canon's Helpdesk

The best printer I found was the Canon 800 something a few years back, dedicated Photo printer...

I use an EPSON R800 and I think its better than the photos you would get anywhere , a good digital camera helps too

If it's pics being printed off of the computer, then it could be that the pics you're using are ones that have been shrunk in resolution/quality to upload them.

Yes, I thought it was cool that it also had a scanner/photocopier built in. The girl in the shop said it makes no difference to the picture quality and its a bonus that it does the other stuff. She pointed out the dpi print resolution and said it was excellent. I am never really gonna use the other stuff, just want to print really nice photos and print off normal letters and internet pages.

I am using the Epson photo paper that came with it..

do I need to take it back? I have destroyed the packaging already

Most comps do the cartridges especially to print photos. The quality is so much better and the print lasts longer and doesn't fade as quickly ....

edited to add: use it till it runs out then take it back and bearing in mind the cartridges are half empty when you buy new printers that shouldn't take too long

IMO for what you want to do (print HIGHEST quality pictures), I would take it back and swap it for an Epson model that is a dedicated PHOTO QUALITY printer.

These dedicated machines Canon/HP etc are absolutely superb. You get stunning pic quality/detail......well, as long as you dont skimp on the actual paper quality (read above)...

But its called the Epson Stylus PHOTO!!!

I know normally that combo machines never work as good as a machine built for a specific purpose BUT if the print resolution is as high as the other Epson models then why would they be better?

it is a "Stylus Photo", and being Epson it should be really good ...........so am a bit confused about the actual print quality that you are getting......It could just be the settings not matched to the paper that you are using

hello Lee,

I maybe able to help.

Epsons a prone to leaving banding due to the technology they use. Also did you know that when you charge the cartridges in epson's it loses 17% of its ink in this process. Also Epson's use pigment based ink. This is very thick compared to dye based ink meaning that it is only suited to certain paper.

TAKE IT BACK!!!!!!!! Tell them that the IT DID NOT DO WHAT THEY SAID IT WOULD!!!!

buy a Canon IP4000 or above.

Also paper is the secret, however manufacturers who manufacture the paper try to make it so it works better on one technology rather than all. Kodak have loads of ranges of paper, however only some are suited to some printers.

I work for Kodak and its common knowledge that large mini lab printers have 'special' settings if you are using kodak products with it to give better quality. Although I doubt desktops are this clever .

And doing my sales bit. You can have your digitally captured prints on conventional silver halide paper!. This is far cheaper than the inkjet stuff and just as high quality. It will also last longer. By using something likw www.ofoto.co.uk you email them the piccies and they send you your prints.

lee... i had a rx 425 and although its a good allrounder,i was aswell disapointed with the photos....i sold it and bought a hp7760 and im very impressed with its photo lab quality...others to look for that are highly rated as mentioned above,epsom r200 and r300 or canon ip range

Paul you will also than understand that it is not only the settings but weight of paper, the way the ink is absorbed into the paper and the way the ink is held on the paper.

Most paper is three layer. Our Canon paper has been optimised for usage with our software that is provided in the box.

If you feel the paper you will notice the difference.

Doug there only about £8 each and being seperate you dont ahve to replace them all at once. its called single ink tank technology.

Imagine you have one cartridge that holds 3 colours. one runs out, you have to replace all of them even though the other two have not run out yet. So you waste ink, and you pay for a extra two colours you dont need.

TBH I think Porkie just needs a plain & simple Epson/Cannon DEDICATED photo printer, and use it with the manafacturers premium photo paper.............

As with my Epson PHOTO 890 the results are superb every time I use it

true. This is what most people need. Trust me the Canon one is just that. The software makes it soo easy.

Go into your local PC World store on the weekend, they will have a Canon Rep in, he/she may only be a part timer and may not know much but will do a live demo i.e. print of a image for you there and than. You see how easy it is.

Canon offer this all year around. They are actually that do this all year round.

Also heres another thing. Canon have a service where you upload your picture via the internet and they print it on what ever printer you select in there range and post it to you for free. it is called 'yourprint'
