0-60mph, why did they pick 60mph???
was talkin about this today and wondered if there was a proper reason why cars are measured in performance terms by how fast they get to 60mph, why 60, why not 50, or 70, is there any real reason for this

because the rest of the world is using 100km/h......but you english men are using miles per hour.....so 60mp/h is the nearest to the 100km/h....
its the same like driving on the wrong side of the road instead of the rest of the world...

cant remember whole story but its definately american in origin. Something to do with american cars in the 60's accelerating to join a dual carriageway?/ (or their equivalent). i think it was what customers wanted to know about , how fast a new car would do this. The whole industry, especially in uk, took 0-60 as some absolute measure of a cars performance, which it isnt at all.

just finding my feet
casue mesuring 0 to 100 times for a fiat 127 would be counted on weeks not seconds
oh and 0 to 100 on 25 seconds aint gonna make ya wanna buy it
think its cause after that speed when it was brought about the cars acceleration went at a slowr rate than a quicker rate m but like my car does 40 to 140 very quick then its counting each mph and not each 10 mph

Was having a think about this today after reading it on Friday. My theory is based on 0-60 being introduced after the speed limit of 70mph.
How about if people wanted to test how quickly a car could reach a speed but needed some over run. i.e gun it to 60mph and then back off before they were speeding i.e over 70mph. If it was 0-70mph, for that to be tested, the speed limit would have to be exceeded thus condoning speeding.
A lot of the western world has the max speed limit of around 70mph so the sprint to 60mph would become universal.
Just my 2c

what they didn't tell you was that somewhere down the line they would make saxos with a neverending second gear that made them look (on paper) to be real quick but in the real world they were just crap
