Default 22 litre diesel engine rebuild

just thought id show a couple of pics i took today.
im rebuilding one of our caterpillar d8k engines its a 1979 machine.
it was useing water i found the front head was cracked but on inspection it also had a cracked liner, the crack was well outside the fire ring and only ran around the outside so wasnt actually leaking at the moment but while i was in there ive decided to fit all new piston, gudgeon pins, liners, big ends and mains all fp diesel and clevitte parts.
little ends are allowed 1 to 3 thou tolerance and i found all to be 2 thou max so should be good for another 10k hours hopefully.
heres a couple of pics for scale, a pot with a red bull can and peanut butter tin in and the other pic is the old top half of the centre main bearing in my hand!

Nice.

Do you need to check liner projection on that engine?

1979's a little before my time. Only deal with ACERT'S these days.

yes the bores do wear under the liner, we run 8 of these machines, this one has already had counter bore inserts done, those inserts have since been machined out flat within themselves and it now runs a shim under the liner, they are proud but i havnt measured them, i will double check once the spacer plate is on though.

very simple to work on really, everything is just big and heavy. ive now got a boost gauge and fitting, they run 1 bar of boost at 1425 max rpm and make 310 hp and over 1000 lbft.

That's the great thing about developing pissy little GTDI petrol engines. Everything is tiny, and alloy no strain. Still girly work though
