Make sure you don't do that if you need to tax it in a hurry as there'll be no way of doing it otherwise.
If you can pop into a DVLA local office they'll sort it all for you there but as said above by post is easy as well.

Call the dvla and ask where your log book is, they will tell you it is not registered to you, say you watched the previous keep complete and post the v5 and you retained the new keeper slip.
DVLA will sent the previous keeper a letter to say the v5 is being changed to a new keeper and you will get your log book. This way they shouldnt go giving the previous keeper grief for not sending the v5 as you stated you saw it posted off.
