Default Looking at buying a Chrysler Grand Voyager...

As above for the family car... Budget of 3k, looking at either diesel or the 3.3l with lpg! The spec you get compared to ther mpvs makes the the car great value but wondered if anyone has any experience of these, what goes wrong and anything out there better/alternative?

Better MPV's out there than the Voyager for that money. I had a look at one in August, and although the spec was fairly decent, parts prices and reviews on the net put me off. And I wasn't too impressed with the driving position, which is probably just a personal issue. I have quite long legs, and couldnt find anywhere to rest my left leg while driving (manual), no foot rest. And the car losing all the gears 5 mins into the test drive didnt help.

my mates missus had one as she was is a child minder so needed a big wagon...

they had a fair few problems with it, the battery would only last a year and they were mega money, someting like Ł250 iirc but might be wrong, then they had trouble starting it and a local garage said its an engine out job to change the glow plugs! how true that is i have no idea, but thye traded it in - in the summer when it started ok lol

it was diesel, and poor on fuel, killed tyres and was a pig to park

i like the electric rear doors and boot tho lol.

imo dont get one. or a kia karens, guy at work had no end of trouble with one of those!!

i have just sold a diesel 2.8 on an 05 plate with 70,000 miles on the clock for Ł1850, alot of car for the money, i put a new battery on it and it wasn't a huge cost, nice inside, drives o.k but more van like rather than car like on the road, i also have a galaxy 1.9TDDI for the past 4 years and a much better car IMO.

galaxy/sharan/alhambra all the way....

unless you have a friend in america to send you parts cheap as their ten to a penny out there.
Up to '05 zafira petrols are good cars, economical as well, went up to manchester in one before and then drove it back, 1.8 auto lovely drive to be fair and good on the old jungle juice.
Smaller than the galaxy though and the vw 1.9 pd motor is one of the best out there.
Can get 20vT in the seat/vw ones as well, plenty of potential then!!

Iam surprized at the negative comments,Ive had 2 and they were great, not one days problem,I didnt find parts were expensive and what i did buy likes brakes and filters genuine parts wasnt much more than pattern, there a great family car in my opinion we went miles in ours,i had the diesel versions which were good on fuel, loads of room nice to drive seats can be taken out so even more room, whats not to like.

I knew someone that had one, as said crap cars, I think a Austin Allegro is more reliable, someones else I know had one and had problems.

He got rid of it as expensive to run, plus it needed a steering rack, in a car that was only around 5 years old at the time.

Far better alternatives out there!

same as any car i guess,

some good and some bad ones............

i get to see most with problems hence my judgment

if you do buy one, try getting one with warranty for piece of mind?

as for parts, try an american specialist and try to buy in bulk, i.e service bits and brakes, do it all in one go so you dont need to do it again.

could be worse, you could want a PT cruiser

Sean.

The grand cherokees are great buses, been all over the country in mine towing, 4.0 LPG converted and never missed a beat.
The build quality is poor compared to a bm or mercedes but their a lot cheaper so not a fair comparison but their way better built than a shitbox discovery or early range rover which is the price bracket they now fall into.

Compared to the dodge caravan/chrysler voyager however there is a big difference, the 4.0 l was an ancient GMC lump which was revised for the later ones but based on a bombproof motor, the 2.5 td is a ford lump and the later 2.7's a merc both good engines in their own right and the hemi speaks for itself in terms of awesomeness!!!

The caravan got none of them!!

Trim and electrics are poor on the cherokees as well and mines a merc influenced facelift model yet it still had a lot of electrical gremlins like the seat in the wrong place alarm, check coolant level when it was fine etc.

Not knocking it as tbh I can't see for a grand or so a better offroader thats still a lovely luxobarge on the road too.

And they will tow literally anything!!!

They eat batterys because no-one wants to buy the proper Gelbattery for them as they go put for about Ł140!
People put 017 batterys in because they fit and whinge when they die after 12 months. Balljoints arent available on their own (last time I looked), so new ADL Blueprint wishbones at Ł80 a side when they start knocking, alternators and starters were ADL only too, so horrendously expensive.
Also see the link I posted earlier, dont buy one.

Nice spec, yeah the arse steps out real easy on them,I always loved pulling into my road in a bit of damp weather and theres a big corner which is effectively like a roundabout without the concrete bit in the middle, select 2nd or low (not 100% from memory) and at about 10mph turn and give it huge beans, big drift and even bigger wheelspin, great laugh!!!
even better when you see peoples curtains opening thinking "who was that,it can't be that 4 wheel drive, must be kids!!"

Out of interest how do you find it now its chipped, particularly mpg wise?
I have the same motor in my merc ml and its good on derv, about 30 in average driving but I do feel its a bit sluggish on pull off, chipping could sort that?

We looked at a couple about 4 years ago, ended up going for a well specced Galaxy, that was a great car for us, VW reliability with a Ford badge
