My cousin has an insignia on a 58 plate it's a 1.8 petrol, last night his heater would only blow cold and it had lost all its coolant, after topping the water up it was still blowing cold and the water in the expansion tank was boiling like a kettle and running out of the overflow pipe.
This morning the heater is working but it's still loosing water, the temp gauge on the dash sits at half way like it always has, any ideas?

I can only see it visually loosing water from the expansion tank overflow so I presumed it was just that, it has done 60,000 miles though but I'd have thought being a newish motor the head gasket would be ok.

If it's been neglected for a while or just 'tards working on it there could have been the wrong amount of coolant put in and therefore the system's full of air and needs bleeding.
Be aware though modern Vauxhalls do suffer from HG issues so get it checked out if possible.
Try draining the coolant out and refilling to just below the manufacturers capacity for the car so you know its roughly right,if possible take the overflow pipe off from the expansion tank(should be a thin pipe going into the top of the expansion tank at the highest point),run it up to temp and make sure the thermostats open etc. You should then see this thing going a bit mental, like a kettle as you described earlier until eventually theres just coolant flowing out pretty steady then you know you've pretty much bled the system through. Also make sure your heaters are on hot inside the car as the matrix needs filling too.
It's surprising how much coolant they take and how easy it is to over/under fill it.

Well it turned out there was air in the system and a small water pump leak, we got the air out and done a temp repair on the pump to get him through Christmas.
Cheers lads.
