Default Cone filter strange sounds

Can anyone comment as to why i'm getting a strange sound under full boost coming from the cone filter as if it's being sucked inside the turbo

The filter is brand new and has developed ripples

Under hard boost i was getting a thudding noise coming from it

The filter is the Airtec GT series filter

it could be the hose between turbo and filter collapsing. i had this a few months back, the compressor wheel sucks so hard it pulled the hose walls together.

Interesting, will have to look at that but it appears that the air filter has been well sucked in to make creases like it has

Does sound like the hose collapsing , what's the hose you have in between the filter and turbo ? can you sqeeze the hose easily by hand ?

If anything is getting sucked in that surely shows that there is too much of a negative pressure. Doesn't that point towards the filter being too restrictive?

when did this start happening?
was it when you've changed the filter?
if so, change it for another brand.

Had it with mine even on a group a K+N, I did change to a solid intake pipe though. It didn't seem to affect performance

Chris that filter damage is not from suction... And by the look of that hose that's your problem mate...I've got a 4-5ply thick black hose in mine and its fine with the same filter as you...

Only way it would suck that hose in is if the filter was restricting air flow! I've the same pipe on mine with a group a k and n with no probs

How many layers has the hose got?
You need to take it off and have a look, if it's not a good quality hose (even if it's new) it will collapse under acceleration as the suction force will draw it together, which also may put extra stress on the filter.
You have to be careful when buying hoses for these kind of turbos, i did a bit of digging when i fiitted a T4 and there are loads of dodgy thin hoses that will collapse.

It sounds like the hose collapsing causing the turbo to suck so hard its also collapsing your air filter.

What make is your intake hose ?

Mine was turned down from 38-36 because of surge.. But the hose I have even tho it's a smaller bore so at 4-5ply will be stronger never had any issue's... It really sounds like the hose to me IMO.

My hose looks the same as yours! If I could be arsed to go out side I'd check what make it is but I know it's an odd make! I've never had mine collapse and I run 2.6 bar all the way up

The smaller the inner diameter the stronger the 4-5 ply is... Don't forget mines only a baby T34

Everyone saying it's the hose....

And nobody asking what the boost is doing during this noise.

And can you make a video of the noise ? ( with audio of course )

It has to be the filter surely causing a restriction as the air demand increases, there is a vacuum ( low pressure ) created sucking the hose flat. Sure the hose looks soft but if it had an open end or a free flowing filter then it wouldn't really see that much negative pressure.

I'm going to speak to the manufacturer of the filter and see what they say, i've seen really back K&N filters in the past that look like they've been sucked inside out nearly - i'm not sure if it's a hose or filter issue yet - i will get the car out today and see if it still happens as the last time i was out in it i didn't get an odd sounds but then i can't see whats going on under the bonnet.

Another thing i can do is mount my small camera under the bonnet to view what is happening on high boost

Still maintain it's a poor quality/insufficient hose and a bad filter, I don't rate K&N's if I'm honest but I know plenty of people use them without any issues.
It's a huge turbo drawing lots of air, this is why it is collapsing, nothing to do with boost pressure, it's all on the suction side.
The best thing you can do it buy a good filter and a new reinforced hose.

Peak boost has nothing to do with it. What does the boost do during the noise. If a hose was collapsing restricting airflow, boost would fall.

Banging sound, restriction almost as if it was hesitant,, boost cut - it was actually the first time i give the car boost but & was near on 0° ambient so would have that made a difference? it's not done it since even at full boost in 4th holding around 30psi - i'll see if my camera shows up under the bonnet but it will give sound if not able to view.

Just been out in it and driving through the gears on very low boost up to 4th say 15psi and bang you hear it - yet full boost in 4th nothing into 5th the same. cant use the camera as nowhere to mount it. Just pulled in an this hose is very spongy

The car had no surge issues at all while we were mapping, i can only assume chris is right with the hose issue. Here to help though if needs be.
