I believe you can change your old for newer equivalent. As the pinto is no long in production you could use a zetec as your engine has failed. You can buy the mounts from any kitcar maker. Bolt straight it and buy some bike carbs to run it.

Depends on your budget, capri 3.0 carb, decent air filter, 4-2-1 exhaust manifold and decent exhaust should see 120ish, if you can afford more, get the head ported, high lift cam (rl31 is a good fast road profile) and some headwork should see a bit more. Then your in twein carb territory, twin 45s, ported head head with bigger possible bigger vales, and by now I'd say some work to the bottom end (a good balance, possibly bore it out to 2.1 litres with cast pistons) could see as much as 165bhp. That will give a great fast road engine. If you can afford it, you can get 220bhp out of a 2.0 for Ł12k! Or even more with a long stroke crank, injection and race fuel, fuck it, go all the way and fit an alloy bottom end and take it to 2.7 litres!

I'd go with this, get it re jetted with a decnte air filter and exhaust, thats probs all that will fit in your budget, and a good service too actually.

in my opinion and from what ive done with pintos so far they really are not worth modding unless your willing to put thousands and thousands in to get next to FA in return when it comes to money to bhp value, in one sence it would prob work out cheaper to drop in a standard ford v8 engine in that hits 200bhp without any mods prob costing you around Ł1000 depending on engine and skills/capability of fitting it yourself

If you mate has a 2.8 then get that lump from him for the pistons. Take your lump out and rebuild your bottom end and bore out to 93mm (i think) and use the v6 pistons. Cheap, only cost about 60 quid to be bored plus shells and rings.

Spend the rest of your money on head work. Something has to be done with the rods? I sure someone can tell you what.

not as straight forward as that think you have deck the block aswell to get compression right and narrow small ends i think,
If you've only got 400 to spend your best bet is ebay, second hand ported head, 4 branch +exhaust, K&N and rejet standard carb.
It'll make about 125 if your engine is in good nick to start with

To be honest with your budget I would just give it a full service, get a 4 branch and exhaust on for a better soundtrack and take it for a set up. Wouldn't bother taking the head off, having it worked and cammed etc etc. Not for the gains you will see. Unless you spend big bucks I don't think you'l get the power you hope for. Also sometimes people feel they need more power and never change gear over 4k rpm. Give the girl some proper revs and see how she feels!

to go with gjh post of 3l carb and k&n
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Pinto...item4abd71e260
all you need find then is a four branch manifold. Not a lot spent and should go quite well for pennies

I think considering your budget, the "fickleness" of the pinto to cams, the already large size of the ports, the milage of the motor and the cost effectiveness and limitations of modifiing the motor i would agree with the posters who recommend leaving the head on and the block alone.

on your budget 2 twin-choke 45mm side draught webbers would give a good improvement, a bigger single doundraught webber would look very similar to whats on now, if the carb is blended/ matched/ gas flowed to the inlet manifold (and the manifold to the head) it can make a big difference, the air filter is poorly designed and restrictive an encapsulated cone filter/ CAIS helps (PX venom etc) or an open carb with a cool air feed

you will need to re-jet set up the carb/s and it helps if you have someone who knows what they are doing for this

you could fit colder plugs (stock are a bit hot IMO) this would allow you to run a little leaner for better MPG (modded pintos can be gutsy brutes)

the above and a better exhaust would be sensible mods probably within your budget

even if you had money to burn, i feel it would be better spent on a transplant (a 3.0 or 2.8 v6 springs to mind) than spending ŁŁŁŁŁŁŁŁs on the pinto

the volvo/ focus ST 5 cylinder turbo kicks out about 225bhp stock and can easily (and realatively cheaply) be made to put out 300+ - that would be an interesting project, the 2.0L t cosworth engine would be another very sensible option rather than spending silly money/ time/ hassle rebulding the pinto block/ head for realatively small returns

i had a 1.6 pinto saph
wanted power so i bought a 2ltr pinto, fitted twin40 carbs, newman road cam, skimmed head, twin throttle linkages
she goes well, but imo a waste of money

they sound great, but thats about it, i spent a clean fortune
webbers Ł300
cam an followers Ł100
head skim an gaskets Ł70
2ltr pinto Ł100
twin linkages Ł80

an there's still loads i can do

blake1992 how good are you with spanners? You know your way around an engine? In terms of engine swaps and removing, rebuilding head etc?

TBH the best thing you can do is save up more, pintos are lovely little engines and sound great on a set of carbs, so I'd deffo keep it, use it as it is for now until you have enough funds aside to give it a good going over (headwork, cam, carbs, possibly rebore, exhaust etc).

not worth it in my opinion, (why bother) may as well stick with the pinto if its only 2.0L (the same capacity as the pinto) + your pinto has only done 25k, if you are going to fit a Colone V6 you would be better with the 2.8i
