Default Lotus 7 kit car based on sierra chassis,, engine choice??

Hi all, my dad has had his kit car for over a year, it's a lotus 7 replica based on a sierra, it currently has 1.6 pinto engine in it with a 4speed box, unsure of box, anyway,, was thinking of getting the car of him and having it as a project and swapping the engine over,,

Any idea what the choices I have?

Thanks for any suggestions

Anything that came in a Sierra? All depends how much you want to spend and what power you are after.

Something with a bit more get up and go.... Not had much dealings with Sierra engine and pintos ect, what sort of money's in a 2.0l pinto? Is the 2.0 longer in length and height as the 1.6 ?

If it were mine I'd go for a bike engine! You can pick up a whole crash damaged bike for bugger all

ST170 £500?

options are endless but its budget dependant!

gearbox is the last thing id pick, engine, diff ratio then box IMO

it wont be based on a sierra chassis

but it might be based on a sierra rear axle and drive train.

Check the chassis manufacturer to see what other engines they fit into the car.

if you can fabricate, you can fit most things that physically fit the space, however its easier if you can just buy off the shelf mounts from the manufacturer. makes it soo much easier.

I should imagine a stage 3 yb would give you more 'bang for buck' than any other option?

This man speaks sense.

Zetec is cheap, reliable, and all the power you need to have fun and its been done before loads.

As Sean says a nice Zetec engine would be a real bargain improvement, set of bike carbs and you're away with a decent power for a small light car, much better than the Pinto anyway.

Have a look through the www.locostbuilders.co.uk forum, lots of info on there on various engine options.

I have a 2.0 zetec in mine running the standard ecu (1997 Pats) and fuel injection with a home made manifold.

Runs great.

I am now working on the st170 ecu.

A good 2.0 pinto will cost you about £300, had a spin in a mk2 recently that had a 2.4 pinto, if you can strech to an engine spec like that, you'll never stop smiling.
